Just thought I'd post this for anybody thinking about changing there exhaust. Well took my precats out last year and there was a slight increase in noise but nothing major. A friend has precats out and a sleeved exhaust and I found his a bit annoying, ok for a quick blast but annoying after a while. So I decided to try one of Clives decat Y pieces, pre cats out and standard silencer, well firstly big thanks to Clive the decat is very impressive to look at and easy to fit.
Once fitted I found a nice increase in idle noise plus slightly deeper tone and when giving it some it sounds glorious, now the main plus point for me was when doing motorway speeds I couldn't tell any difference to before I fitted it, so for me best of both worlds sounds great when you want but not to loud to be annoying if your travelling somewhere!
Can't comment on what differnce its made performance wise as I haven't driven it for months so cant tell the difference anyway!
Hope this helps other people make the decission of all cats out, standard silencer.

What do you do about MOTs? Refit the old exhaust or go somewhere "friendly"?

It is pretty easy to swap over but my plan is cat in the boot next to a crate of beersmile In fairness it stinks when its running now so pretty obvious it would fail miserably as it is.

How much was it out of interest? I quite like the ACT system where you have the sections you can swap for cats.

Nice write up Mike - I am in the middle of preparing my new manifolds (cleaning, de-pre-catting, POR20 paining etc) and can't wait to put it all together in the coming weekends.

My back box has not been sleeved, but 'something' has been done to it......

So I will give it a go, and if it is too loud with Clives Y piece, then I will get the rear box back to full standard.

Cheers

£500-600? Is it possible to replace existing cats to original functionality so as to preserve the environment ?

I have also fitted one of Clives y-piece'. Couldn't belive it fitted easier than either of my standard y-piece' confused Superb quality and delivered when said. Nice to report on a quality TVR product/service. thumbup
I also have precats out but silencer in place [though it is half size, a semi-sport I belive from factory,,, anyone else?] Keeps it muted cruising and nice bark on load pedal.
PS: have a ceramic coated standard y-piece for sale. getmecoat

Sounds good (sorry for the pun)
How do I get one and how much do they cost?
Also MOT issues with them in?
Cheers

Just PM Clive on here.
Mot is either swap back or friendly mot station.

Buying Y piece plus delivery and taking off your old piece and getting garage to fit new one I'm guessing £500 plus all in ?

My cars great for the environment as it sits gathering dust most of the month !

I've just done almost exactly the same to mine. pre cats out, ACT de catted y-piece and standard silencer.

First run out on Saturday and I can report similar findings to the OP - slightly noisier but nothing too much at normal speeds - but.... give it the beans and it sounds more raspy, more race car than road car. thumbup

Still can't get any pops and bangs out of mine on the overrun though!

Ok, this worries me - only cos I get a bootiful burble on the overrun with stock rear and (currently) fully catted manifolds and y piece,,,,,,,

I didn't get much popping or banging on overrun before I fitted the decat and no real difference now, if you feather the throttle I get a bit. My mate with the sleeved silencer is like cannon fire though so really depends how your engines set up.

I also have Clive's beautiful Y-piece, similar experience to the OP. Lovely sound at idle and only slight increase at M-way speeds...... worth the money just to look at though smile I would be interested in some manifolds at a later date.

I am also having issues with popping and banging, or lack of. Tried all sorts, guess she is just set up to well and not chucking any unburnt fuel down the pipes smile

Bought my 450 already decatted, my local TVR mechanic turns down the mixture for the MOT. Noise has not been an issue for MOT. I haven't driven a catted chim so can't comment on the difference. I know mine sounds fab and really turns heads. Don't you just love posing!

unless you have a straight through exhaust you wont get what I call pops n bangs and can be to noisy for some ?
even then it wont be the same pop n bang noise that you get from a speed 6 fitted with a sports exhaust on over run

My old Griff had an ACT Y-piece, ACT cherry bomb exhaust and pre-cats removed. Sounded like a howitzer barrage when warmed up and provoked (revs at about 3k, hold and then come off the throttle) - some flames also I was told.

I have fitted ACT decat manifolds with Clive's Y piece and a 'sports' system (fitted by a previous owner). Not too voluminous but a lovely series of pops and bangs over 4000, and double de - clutching down the box and blipping to over 4500 sounds even better...
