Severn Road Race

I believe the chap is called Junior Hefferman, a successful Triathlete from Plymouth, just a basic search shows that he was a nice chap and bloody good at what he did.
He had a busy weekend planned and raced at Ludgershall yesterday (In the same race as my younger brother) and obviously in the severn today.
I dont know any further details of how exactly it happened, but its extremely sad and really highlights how dangerous cycling can be on the road. In the last month 3 people I know have had incidents on the road (including myself) - this just tops it off.

Far too much public (inconvenience) and police (manpower/cost) opposition to closing roads nowadays. Most cycling and running races take place on open roads (excluding the big events), with the self-evident risks. Awful for the driver of the car too! I was always under the impression that racing (as opposed to TT / sportives etc) on the roads was not allowed, but having just checked, it seems that as long as police are notified, and you follow any conditions imposed by them, then it's ok. Riders must then abode by all road signs (I wonder if that involves give way / lights etc?)

I remember doing a duathlon years ago where I was just catching another rider and the traffic lights changed to red between us. There's a level of co-operation expected/requested from other road users when a race (running or cycling) is on open roads - the race marshalls have no power to direct traffic so any priority given to the racers is by consent, courtesy and generally works most of the time. You do get the occasional driver who refuses to play along, like you get some racers who will make things more difficult than need be to share the road, but mostly it works.
Unfortunately with open roads, you will occasionally get accidents (or should I call them collisions?) and this specific case sounds like a tragedy for all involved.

Er... I think traffic lights and give way signs fall under the category of "all road signs"

I believe that in Wales this now isn't always the case, with "Accredited Race Marshalls" who do have power to direct traffic, but I could be wrong.You won't find that any road races are run on courses with traffic lights on them, and the vast majority have left turns only to make it more simple.
What needs to happen is giving the marshals and NEG outriders on motorbikes the power to stop traffic at the junctions, creating a rolling road closure, this happens in Wales, and obviously most places in Europe and would make things vastly more safe.
This country is a joke, we're miles behind, we have a current TDF champion, a former world champion, and a promising scene, but we will never produce riders of note if we can road racing, I doubt.
Having said all that, the above posts really highlight that there is an education issue going on, people should know that this happens, same for TT's, its amazing that people are unaware of the sport, there must be 1000 TT's run every year on open roads, but people aren't aware.
