Top Gear is on one of it's rubbish travelogues.

Although I could pull out the watercooled trump card...

If they don't appeal to you, no point in answering.

If they do, what makes them float your boat over the water-cooled models?

It wouldn't bother me if my 991 was air-cooled because I bought it because of its completeness.

Any real benefits of having an water-cooled car? Better noise? More performance?

Not wishing to start any wars, just interested in why you prefer them
Do you mean air?

Actually I meant to type "tits" but autocorrect obviously interfered!

Because they're a lot faster than the air cooled ones. And they ride better. And they have creature comforts. And they don't attract the wrong sort of facial hair at owners events. :-)

The change to water cooled upset many 911 fans. It was one of the key characteristic features of this incredibly unique car.

But in reality, it was a none event, it was necessary. I think that a lot of people focus too much on this detail when they talk about the 996, which was the first newly designed 911 since the original car.

The 911 is 50 this year and there has actually only been 3 cars, and one of them is only 2 years old!

I think Porsche did a fantastic job with the 996. It appealed to a new breed of owner and a much wider market. Guys that would never have considered buying a 911 loved the 996 and the 997 was a natural progression with a little more hint of its forebears.

I've wanted a 911 since I was about 10 and recently joined the fold. Having now well and truly been sucked over the 911 event horizon I'm also looking for a late 60s/early 70s classic to play with and can see a 993 in my future, once we have enough garage space. My 997.2 is exactly the car I want for a daily driver - but that doesn't lessen the appeal to me of the air-cooled cars. They're all 'real' 911s imho, just with a changing focus over time. That said, my personal sweet spot is probably between the early cars and the 997 - the 991 a little overly GT for me, largely because of its spectacular competence - I want something that I genuinely have to learn to drive properly and that feels different from the pack, something that I've found both air and water-cooled cars to have.

In business terms you are certainly right.

But for me, they went too far. However they quickly redeemed themselves with the epic GT3. If it wasn't for this car born out of their desire to continue racing, for me porsche would have ended in 1997.

They are currently designing an LMP1 car for the 2014 season. For me, this is what it's all about, not automatic headlights.
