Skoda Superb V6!

Granted this car isn't as exciting or interesting as most of the others in this part of the forum, but I thought that it was good enough to do a write up for!
Towards the end of last year Dad took delivery of an Audi A3 to replace the Volvo V70 seen in this thread here. The idea being that a small petrol engine car would be as economical as the big Volvo which needed quite a bit of work done on it at the time outweighing it’s value. I didn’t report any more on this but all wasn’t too well. No matter how you drove this new car it would only return about 32mpg (even after the running in period) It was useless!
Anyway, this week Dad started a new job meaning now he needs a new car as this Audi has gone. Initially the idea was to get some sort of cheap diesel automatic car, but most on sale weren’t so great
Budget increased we had another look at the classifieds and quickly confirmed it was the Superb that we wanted, especially as the value for money is just phenomenal. Just try getting any Audi/VW of the same age with under 35000miles, full leather interior (plus heated front/rear seats) and satellite navigation with a full dealer history for £7.5k! The dealer also agreed to put a new MOT two new front tyres, cambelt and pulley for no extra money.
Deposit left the car was collected yesterday – and I am on the insurance (for a week – thank you VW free 7 days insurance!), a convenient coincidence as the Porsche was also having its wheels refurbished at Lepsons (highly recommended – they look a treat!) up the road and needed someone to drive the new car home!
In one word the car is excellent to drive. The 2.5 V6 diesel ‘only’ has 150bhp, but it uses that power fantastically. Getting up to motorway speeds is incredibly simple – nothing will compromise the ride, its super smooth. The car is absolutely planted; squeaks and rattles are nonexistent. The suspension is super smooth and irons out any bumps in the road. Round town it really feels its size, but it is a doddle to drive with that auto box, so some points are won back there! It's going to spend pretty much all it's life with us up and down the motorways and I know it'll be great - all it needs now it's it's PH sticker!

This is amazing.
Used to have a 1.9 tdi comfort. Drove like a boat and I loved it. Regret selling it and basically dying to get back into one. Would love to go for the v6 petrol with an auto. I just like how they are a mish mash of other VW bits. the lighting in particular, nothing matched. green dials with orange MFD, white LEDs in the door handles and 2 red LED's in the ceiling. a hodge podge. You'll have to report back what the fuel consumption is like!!! So I can perform more man maths.
Edit. I see its a diesel 6.... Still chime back with the fuel though and how reliable its been. I haven't heard about these engines being all that great, but I am sure if its looked after it'll see you right.

I noticed how a few people were expecting the petrol V6 
Oops, should have put diesel in the title. Now to answer some questions:
I've been driving the car a lot more than expected over the last few days. I feel a bit gutted for Dad as he's now gone away for work for a week - so I'm using the Skoda now - getting back into the Micra is going to be a struggle

I'm still working out what all the buttons do at the moment - I've only got it on instantaneous MPG - my record low has been 15MPG! M159V8 said:

Lovely, looks like there is loads of space in it!
However, that centre console is terrible!! Sticking a load of old rectangular Skoda climate and infotainment pods into a Passat console, it looks like someone has badly fitted a load of aftermarket kit in it. Shame really, my mk2 Octavia had a really nice centre console (for a VAG!)
Quite amazing how technology has progressed in just 5 years though, isn't it? My dads new BMW 320d Sport has a 2.0 litre turbo diesel, 184 hp and 280ft lb torque with 68mpg and next to no emissions! Comparing it to the V6 diesel in this with 150hp (and a low of 15mpg!) is quite staggering.

I guess this car was essentially made from the parts bin from other cars in the VW group. The engine for instance is quite an old one hence why in modern standards it's got an low power output for it's capacity (I remember Audi had this engine in their A6 years and years ago) - the MPG thing was instantaneous - but again I would only expect mid 30's on a run to be honest. I had also overheard something when at another Skoda dealer that a salesman was saying to a customer but I think it probably applies to their cars. Basically they see what technology is a hit with the VW/Audi customers, and then use it instead of developing their own tech - hence why this car may seem a little outdated - especially as a 2007 car!However, that centre console is terrible!! But at the end of the day I'm still very happy with it, it's a top spec car (ex demo). The first owner was a perfectionist and kept it absolutely original, and it's great for the motorway where it will no doubt be spending most of it;'s time
You should get a copy of the March edition of Car Mechanics, it have a full write up on buying the MK1 Superb, service items, Things to watch out for etc. They rate it very highly as a second hand buy.

All the taxi drivers round here seem to be going for new Superbs now. Never really saw them driving many of the old ones but the old shape Octavia was very popular amongst them. I suppose they must get good deals on the Superbs, no doubt with the most poverty spec basic diesel engine in it!

I previously worked in technical sales. That sounds like so much BS it makes me glad I no longer work in a sales role. I'm one of those sales types that says to purchasers 'if you use these two part numbers instead of the one part number you've got, you'll get the same stuff cheaper'. I was one of those sales people that works for customers having switched to sales after years in technical roles.Skoda is part of VAG. They share parts, economies of scale etc. That doesn't work if you have Skoda and Seat going off on their merry way and developing their own bits. They'd be like SAAB completely redoing and over engineering the Tipo Quattro 164/9000/Thema/Croma and subsequent GM platforms. They'd soon be bust and VAG profits would be reduced and then they'd not be able to squander money on pet projects like the Veyron and Phaeton.
I'm sure the sales person that uttered what you overheard isn't all bad but I think they could be a prime candidate for a good cuff around the ear.
If you take a look at the Honest John website they mention it's a long wheelbase Passat developed for the Chinese market.
I hate to drizzle on your parade but I thought the cams in these were prone to failure. You'll have to do your own research. I spoke to a specialist on the phone about it and they said it was due to cambelt failures or the cambelt timing not being set correctly when replaced. There's one of these engines in the family in an Audi and when I looked into it there's a manufacturer of pattern cams. I'd not come across pattern cams before, performance cams for fast road or motor sport applications I'd heard of, but not alternative suppliers of standard cams. Perhaps it's a lack of knowledge on my part, I'd thought car makers would make their own cams rather than buy them in like seats, grilles and glass.
I half jokingly cup my hands over the ears of the toddlers in earshot when the Audi with this motor starts up.
I love the colour, and it looks like the shade I love on the Seat Toledos (The Golf IV ones).
There's a light coloured one that parks around the corner that's had a patch plated on the rear end of the cill. From what I've read elsewehere Octavias can go a bit flaky there too. I've had cars plated there before but surprised to see it on a Superb given how much younger it is. Perhaps it's been parked on a quayside or in some other salty environment?
Does the Car Mechanics article on them mention the cams?
I don't like having a downer on the V6 but I did try to tell my relative to with one in an Audi to buy a 4 cylinder TDi, but it seems that size and numbers and image is everything. For their needs I think a 4 cylinder one would have been fine. It was fun removing the plastic and plumbing atop the engine to get access to swap it to upgraded bulbs as their other car has Xenons and they weren't finding normal bulbs illuminating enough.

Thought I'd do a little update of some things with the new car:
The Bad:
I didn't mention this at the start but a minor annoyance was having bought the car home we noticed some trim was missing from the drivers side front. Having had this sent to us we have noticed that one of the attachments for it is broken! Also there is an alarming number of chips in the windscreen that certainly not there originally (both of these were spotted last Saturday and Skoda were contacted). Upshot, the dealer are more than happy to fix these at no extra cost. All is good!
The Good:
We keep finding new toys on the car! Monday night when driving it home from the station I discovered that it has xenon lights (I believe). Yesterday when driving in the rain the windscreen wipers seem to vary their speed depending on the amount of rain hitting the screen - discovered by accident by Dad as he passed a lorry on the motorway throwing up a large amount of water onto the screen!
Having driven the car more I can find a downfall that is slightly annoying (particularly in town) - The gearbox. Whilst its very smooth changing gear I find that it's a bit too eager to drop a gear when it's capable of giving me enough grunt in it's current one - you really have to feather the throttle! Great thing though is the acceleration - for a big heavy diesel bus of a car it's actually quite fast pulling out of the junctions and gets up to speed very quickly (in comparison to my daily driver!
)
I know someone replied talking about cambelt changes and the reliably of this engine. Well Skoda did change the cambelt in this as part of he deal with us - Touch wood nothing will go wrong.
I also mentioned in another post the quoted MPG figures of being about 35MPG combined. My instantaneous MPG was crap in town - but on a run we got 33MPG - not fantastic but at least it's nearer to it's quoted figure than the A3!
