Hi everyone,

I just purchased a MK2 1.8 and so far I've covered 200 miles of just fun driving in the two days I've owned it.

However, before I picked the car up the brake fluid and one of the callipers was changed (dealer paid). Issue is though, the brake pedal feels.. not quite as crisp as I was expecting when doing a very hard stop.

I'm wondering if some of it is down to reasonably old tires, but on the other hand are these cars characteristic for poor/mediocre brake pedal feel?

Best regards,

Matt.

I found the brake feel on my mk1 1.8 disappointingly vague, so fitted a Jas master cylinder stopper, and braided hoses all round. Vast improvement.

Brakes should feel absolutely fine. They usually need a bit more effort than a family hatch (they are usually over-servoed) but if the pedal feels a bit soft then it's likely there is still air in the brake lines and they need bleeding again.

I also find that the handbrake adjustment on the rear calipers can affect pedal feel a fair bit.

If the handbrake is weak too its worth looking into.
