A few weeks ago I took my MR2 turbo on track at the Sunday Service. It handled itself reasonably well, albeit the brakes were toasted after about 20minutes.

The impression I came away with was that I enjoyed the track time, but not enough to throw silly money at it, which my elderly mk2 would clearly need. Talking to a couple of the MR2OC guys today produced the idea of a mk3 MR2 as a track toy (I won't use the phrase "weapon"!!).

Does anyone have any experience of the mk3 in this arena? I know they're good in the MR2 challenge races, but I'm not sure to what extent those are modified.

There's about 10 of these cars around me for <1,500 so grabbing a leggy example and having a go shouldn't be too ruinous. Plus, if I do catch the bug properly there are a huge range of tuning parts and engine swap options around.

What does everyone think? Total waste of time or viable budget giggles?

The MR2 Mk3 is a chirpy little thing and so cheap now. it's not going to run rings round things, but its perfectly decent fun on roads and tracks.

i'd say that if you want to learn to drive on trrack properly, then keep it standard and get used to a mid engine rwd car. if you get it and start to become competent, then consider upgrading parts, or buy somethig a bit more track focussed.

boils down to cost in the end.

it's a car you can learn and then master - that's far more rewarding than something that's effin quick but that you never explore it's boundaries because the car is better than you....

My girlfriend has a Mk3 MR2 that I use every now and again. I think it would be good fun on the track. They are light weight cheap to run and cheap to repair. We have had ours 18 months and I’ve never even had to put oil in it.

I looked at buying 1 for a track car but went to a Tiger kit car instead.

1 thing worth looking into is that if you did get 1 and after a while wanted more power they can be fitted with a turbo or even better a Toyota 3l V6 so you could always upgrade it after a while.

If your serious I am looking to get rid of my girlfriends was going to p/x but if you’re interested let me know.
