Now I know that next year, with the new engines, the exhausts will have to exit along the car centre line - effectively over the top of diffuser, so that a blown diffuser as implemented in the last few years is not possible.

But of course, the engines also have turbo chargers, the turbines of which can be driven by exhaust gases for the purposes of compressing air for the engine inlet. The turbines can also be used to charge a battery or can be driven by an electric motor (i.e. spun up without exhaust gases).

The bit that interests me is the last part - you can run the turbo electrically to compress air. Now given that the engines are turbocharged, they will need a wastegate, right? So... why not strap a massive turbo to your car, run it electrically, make the wastegate 'leaky' and exit the compressed gases around the diffuser to seal it's edges? Is there anything in the regulations stopping that or is it just not feasible (obviously the volume of the gases available might be lower than the volume of exhaust gases simply because of the lack of combustion. but can you overcome that with a big enough turbo?).

I don't know if it is specifically worded as such, but a waste gate would be part of the exhaust, and would therefore have of exit on centre line.

If the rules don't cover that, expect the FIA to close it sharpish...

maybe what i mean then is 'dump valve'. i think i got my terminology wrong. i wanted to vent compressed air not exhaust gases.

Lets exhaust gas bypass the hot side, thereby moderating spindle speed (and hence boost) = Wastegate
Lets compressed intake air eject from inlet tract once throttle butterfly shuts, preventing turbo from stalling = Dump Valve

ok, dump valve it is then. What I mean is: compress the intake charge massively, way higher than the engine could take. Run the turbo at constant speed using the motor that it is equipped with. make the inlet manifold (compressed side...) 'leaky' so as to reduce the pressure to where the engine needs it and exit the leak in a suitable position to blow the diffuser.

I am no expert but I cant imagine you would have enough volume of air to make it worthwhile.
