I bought a 996 C2 (my first Porsche after a succession of fast Audis, BMWs and Mercs) just over a week ago. I'm loving it so far - the noise, the handling, the looks - but I know that I'm going to find the relative lack of grunt a bit frustrating before very long. I suspected this would be the case but the change to a 996 was very much spur-of-the-moment so going straight for a Turbo wasn't an option.

I'd like to ask anyone who's gone down this route, or has experience of both cars, whether the Turbo lacks any of the feel of the C2. While I can see myself very much enjoying the pace of the Turbo I don't want to sacrifice any of the other characteristics of the C2.

Sorry that's a bit long-winded. Hopefully it makes sense. smile

Could've written this post myself, except my C2 wasn't bought as a spur of the moment thing.

But then I didn't fancy spending another £10K...

You need to drive it and see what you think. I found the feedback a bit more dull, but YMMV.

I first thought about changing to a 996 on the 19th of February. On the 23rd I bought one. smile

I went from C2 to Turbo, coming up 4 years ago now. Had the C2 nearly 4 years before the change.

In normal driving they feel pretty similar as you'd expect. When gunning it the Turbo is more "planted" (God I hate that phrase and I've just used it banghead) feels very secure and the grip is almost endless when you've got it balanced right. As for feel and all that good stuff, yes the Carrera communicated a little better, but I like the Turbos steering. Great weighting.

The big difference though is obviously the power. As is always mentioned, get one out for a test drive.

I drove my Turbo back to back with a 997C2S, both great cars, but as soon as I'd had the Turbo at full boost that was it...........Done deal, pretty much turned straight back to the dealer and did the deal.

Get one, you won't be disappointedsmile

Definitely a consideration. I won't be taking it to the track though so wouldn't the GT3's charms be wasted on me?

Owned 996 C4S
Tested 997 C2S
Currently own 996 Turbo

Major difference is the power. The 7 2S felt a bit more nimble but the 4WD more planted. The power of Turbo suits the 4WD!! I need to drive in all weather or I'd be considering GT2!!!

You need to test drive a GT3. It is a fantastic road going car. I can only speak for a 996 MK1 and it is pure heaven. Absolute contact with the road. At the same time extremely civilised when need to be. One thing to think on a Turbo is the extra servicing cost over a NA.

You need to test drive each to get your feel for what you want. Other people can comment better on power and feedback n a Turbo in comparison. I am still in my first love affair with mine and smitten.

Great stuff. Thank you. smile

I do love the look of the 996 GT3. I'm a bit concerned that it would be a waste as a road-only car but from your comments, and others I've read, it seems like it might fit the bill.

I have gushed various amounts about the car see one below. As a road car it is amazing. It is a true expereince to get behind the wheel. It has to be done rather than expalined as it will be personal for each person. There is amble room in the front for luggage and behind the seats. Even getting a car seat in was fine for my little one. In fact the leg room was more for him than you would find in a regular one.

I love the look of the 996 and the C4 shape is brilliant and suits the GT3 aero kit amazingly. Depreciation is another key factor in my decision and I feel this will be less on a GT3 if it has been looked after. It is very dependent on what you want to do with the car long term. Crimp a Length is one worth talking to, I do not know him but he has had a GT2 and has gone to a Turbo and he maywell be able to give you advice on pros and cons.

Anyway my Gush on my new GT3.
