Noises after a decent run..996 C2
Discussion
So my car has a known solenoid fault which I'm sorting while I'm out of the country in a week or so but following a run on the weekend the car developed a tappet like noise post a decent thrashing. Was fine on start up & returned post drive to work this morning. Solenoid related or something more sinister? Discuss..

Impossible to say.The thrashing may have aerated the oil and the oil may have been past due to be changed too (and possibly even low...) which didn't help matters and one or more zero lash adjusters got a bit of air in them. That the noise was gone at start up and didn't reappear during a normal drive says the problem was a fleeting problem.
Maybe.
Not quite sure what you mean by "solenoid fault"? The only solenoid fault I'm aware of is the VarioCam system solenoid can fail (completely or intermittently). When one failed in my Boxster though there was no noise just a lumpy idling engine. I certainly didn't thrash the car any but kept the engine speed above and below where the VarioCam activated and hustled the car to a dealer for repairs. New solenoid and camshaft actuator.
I think you should advance your going out the country departure date so the car goes in under the wrench sooner and you can't thrash it any more until afterwards.
