Moving house next week and just got the date through and two quotes for over £1400 for someone to move house (not including packing)

So, I need to rent a van, I'm not sure that it will all fit in a Luton. What's the next size up of van called and can I drive one on a car licence?

Bournemouth to Nottingham Tuesday 12th if anyone has contacts/wants to quote?

Up to 3.5t, which will be something like a LWB sprinter or transit.

I believe the 3.5t is fully loaded.

The Maximum Authorised Mass. Check with the rental companies.

I highly doubt you'll find anything with a bigger volume than a Luton.

Depends on when you passed your test but if you passed before 98 (I think, do check the small print!) you can drive up to 7.5 tons which means small trucks or big vans like the 5 ton Sprinter or 7 ton Vario. If you passed after, you are stuck with driving boring 3 ton vans.

Does it show the category you're entitled to drive on the reverse of your licence?

You can, but you'd be doing well to get one out of a hire company if you don't have an O'Licence.

They don't like hiring them to the general public (even if it's for private use) since the vehicle could get confiscated/impounded at some expense if it's caught being used commercially without the aforementioned licence.

My dad used to hire them in the 80's/90's, but whenever I've tried more recently, the hire companies have insisted on seeing an O'Licence before letting the vehicle go.

Yes, got C1 on Licence.
Just shown the pic to the missus to see if she wants to drive it...yikes is as near as you can get to her expression.

MPG on one of these things?

An LWB Sprinter was no problem for me on a Swedish 'B' (car) licence, hired out by Enterprise a few years back.

Edit to add - managed to clear a 2-bedroom maisonette with one, for an estimate of what they can carry.

For those not in the know, that's an operators licence, not an Irish licence!

Not C1, O'Licence. An entirely different thing.

I've never struggled to get a 7.5 ton van apart from once, when the s had an insurance policy that meant they would not hire to any one who had a claim in the last 3 years.

I thought this was unusually prescriptive and felt that they should have let me know this when I booked it, not when I was collecting it to move house.

2nd Place fortunately had some spare that weekend.

They are also quite fun to drive. Not sure what the consumption is - but st compared to a car is a start!

"If Company use, Company must have an O Licence."

don't need an operators license for a house move/personal use. only if your a company smile
