It is getting excitingly close to the time...

What exactly do others do regarding the location of the front numberplate?

Stick-on - or standard perspex plate stuck on - or bolted on?

As for the rear plate I was thinking about using some rubber rivnuts I have and then ss bolts to retain - but do the heads have to be yellow if the bolts are at each end of the plate and not confusing the numbering?

Don't like the idea of stick-on for the rear.

Finally - Plates ON or OFF for IVA? Does it matter?

cheers

Doesnt registration come after IVA ?
If putting a private reg on it it used to be the case the vehicle was still registered with an age related plate and then the private one transfered.

I've stuck the numberplates onto my cars for yrs and never lost one. I really dislike drilling car bodies if it's not necessary.

I did think about putting my retained personal plate on the car for IVA, but figured this would be pretty pointless as the paperwork part comes afterwards anyway.

Front plate.... mmm, not sure myself. I ran my Atom for 3yrs with no front plate, without a problem. I know, that's a risk.... I'll probably do the same with the Can Am and just carry a spare plate in the luggage pod incase anything happens and I need to plead "it fell off, officer" at any point wink

Registration after iva.

Vinyl front and normal rear is best I reckon

You will not have a reg until after IVA.
IVA requires you to demonstrate the position for the rear plate but that is quite straight forward on the Ultima so no issue. Some kits it is far from clear where you will find space hence the requirement.

My car has had vinyl numberplate for years. The Factory use a normal plastic plate fitted with foam pads.

Stick on plates ( I have one ) are illegal as far as dot/mot requirements are concerned, that's why the factory fit plastic plates.

I think it depends when your car was registered. Mine was registered in 2000, when stick on plates were legal!

Also ran my Atom with no front number plate, with no probs from the Rossers.

From memory bizarrely you can gain 3 points on your license for misplacing letters on plates, or wrong size, or using vinyl on bonnet, yet no points for no plates, just a £60 fine.

Would also never screw plates to bodywork, but just use stickies.

Dave.

Don't. Drill holes you will regret it later with a short private plate.
Most know where mine is and its m.c size and no problems--
I carry full size in the car and if stopped throw it in windscreen just incase-
In fact police very helpfull when i explain front one pointing upwards for their benifit and helicopter-
Bugati Veyron and Enzo have exception with dvla not to run front plates due to no location to place' only cars alllowed however ive had 2cars with no front plates so far boy racer car yes ull get stopped' exotic haggle and get away with it'

Really? They've got an official pardon? I'd like to know how one goes about asking for an exemption scratchchin

Agree with the comment about an exotic car maybe getting a bit of leeway, especially if you are a sensible person and talk to the officer with respect (and you weren't pulled for doing too many leptons!!). I had a few police look around the Atom when it was parked up and they didn't bat an eyelid at the missing front plate.

I just stick my front plate in the windscreen and keep some double sided tape in the car in case, so far so good, can,t bring myself to fix it on and ruin the looks of the car. If i did fix it on though id put it in the radiator vent but not sure if this is legal either!

Cheers Karl.

Mine is here. Had to buy a normal one to keep the MOT inspector happy but don't use it.

Can somebody direct me to where it says in writing that Bugatti etc have a special allowance not to use front plates? I personnaly do not believe it as it would open up a can of worms re discrimination.
I notice Ferrari 458 does not have front plate either.
If you look at DVLA rules about front plates I cannot see a problem with displaying ours on the bonnet as it is readable from the specified heights/angles in the document.
I have an illegaly spaced plate on my other car which has been that way on various cars for 15 years. I have recieved one fine £60 for incorrect display from a copper who wanted to do me for exessive speed but could not.
Some confusion here it seems between number plates which are stickers (now illegal) and using sticky pads to hold plates on.
My front held on bonnet by sticky pads, Has never shown any signs of coming off despite repeated runs to 150+ They are seriously sticky!!!!!!!

Sorry for the nob question but...., if the plates using the sticky pads method are seriously sticky, how do you get them off?

^ Gentle heat with a hot air gun or good hairdryer softens the adhesive enough to pull them off.

The issue is reflectivity to British Standard,
Pedant mode on. If you purchase a stick on plate now and fit on a 2000 registerd car = illegal.
If the plate is 2000 vintage and original you "should" be ok in the eyes of the law.
