i feel im getting too comfortable!

Hi, right I feel I'm getting too comfortable in my job.
I have worked here for 6 years as ane engineer and enjoy it. Money isn't great, but its easy, I feel safe in the job I am in, especially due to the state of The country at the moment. as comfortable as this job is, there is no further prospects available for me here, I wil be in the same job, same position for ever! And I have dreams... if you know what I mean... I am always looking at jobs, but feel put off by applying.

I think what happens if I get this job, then 6 months down the line the place goes tits up? Or I really don't like it?

This is my first proper job from leaving school , is itright for me to be 'worried' about moving on or should I stick with what I have and be greatful I have a job for now? Thanks for your tim

Your attitude to risk and long term ambition will usually determine whether you stay safe or venture out. Try writing down the pros and cons of such a strategy and see which way the scales weigh for you. If you stay, you can liven things up a little by doing other things like: working with the local arm of your professional organisation; governor of a local school; guru lecturing at your nearest engineering college; voluntary work etc, etc. Good luck!

Won't know until you try it, the place you work for now could go tits up in 6 months time, you never know. If you have skills there that other better companies could capitalise on, and give you a similar or better job with better prospects then what's the harm in applying? You've already said you can't get anywhere in the job, so what are your current employers going to do if they start getting reference requests? Overlook you for a promotion they were never going to offer you anyway?

I'll never utter the words "I'm happy to just have a job" as it's bullst, it implies that the company you work for own you, when they don't, it's a partnership, a two way street, they want your time and skills and you want their money, that's how it works. Happy to have a job bullst, just justifies stuff like, crap working conditions, st holiday allowance, st pay and pay rises, and people with that attitude will just roll over and take it, and companies love that. See it all the time here, company posts above and on target profits, goals etc. we ask for a reasonable pay rise, they offer well below inflation pay rise, and a lot of the people here vote to take it, the lowest of the low, first offer, off the back off "ohh well I'm just happy to have a job in this climate", bks. Put in for new jobs, see what comes from it, hopefully youll get one and get paid more, and get more out of your working life, rather than just going through the motions and towing the company lines here you currently work
