Air filter cleaning.

Service time is coming round again.
Last year I did a big service and just replaced the air filters for new ones. What is the correct way of cleaning and re-oiling reliably though? Or is it better to change to a paper element type of filter. Im always a little worried about oiled filters as if the oil goes then it wont filter small children let alone dust.

I put mine in the dish washer. Seems to clean them up a treat. Then re oil with k&n oil
