Hi All,

Having now sorted out my wheels the next on the list is replacing the crapy PCM 2 head unit.

I have done a little searching online and it doesnt look all that easy............

So far I have been told that I will need a conversion kit because everything is fibre optic and that will cost me around £500 and then a double din head unit (I want blue tooth, ipod and a decent sat nav!), fitting and a fitting plate.

The head unit I am looking at is this:

http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/alpine-ine-w925r-n...

Anyone have any experience of doing this and what works well? Is that a good head unit, is there anything different (or cheaper!) that will do the job etc?

Any thoughts/experience greatfully recieved!

Cheers.

No experience at all of this head unit, but I'm very familiar with iGo Primo V1 (the nav software this HU runs)and would happily go back to it in an instant.
V2 seems to be very similar to V1, more of a warmed over evolution than a new version.

I have the one linked in my Cayman, also upgraded the speakers and amp. I can't fault it, great unit for Nav and music/features.

Very much so, thanks!

Was the conversion unit you used as expensive as the one I have been quoted? Seems like that is the most painful/expensive bit and it isndt doing anything fun!

I am led to believe that it is only 'Bose' equipped cars that have the optic connections, I already new this, and having read poor reviews ofall Porsche audio, new I would want to change. Made sure I only looked at basic sound equipped cars. A lot less grief...
Duuring the research, it was always stated the cost involved in the conversion kits wasn't effective, for about the same money as the kit, you will be able to upgrade the speakers and fit a new amp. These generally produce a better sound.

As well as the head-unit, I got Alpine front speakers (Type R, 17cm Components) and an Alpine 8" sub/box in the boot and an amp (Alpine MRV F305) fitted. Night and day if you are into car audio, if not you could probably go for just the speakers wired direct from the head-unit if you have the Bose, if not then I am sure it is easier/cheaper to get a kit to use another head unit with the built in amp.

I hadnt thought about replacing the amp and speakers. Always thoioght that Bose stuff was supposed to be pretty good.......

I am going to pop over to a place in Oxford over the next couple of days (who say they have done a fair few Porsches) and see what the options are. Cant imagine that I could get much better than is already in there for £500 if that included the amp and speakers as well.

Also does messing with the standard OEM stuff mess with resale-ability of the car?

Well let us know how you get on / what you decide; I've a mate who loved the sound system plus in his Cayman and another that said the Bose he had was rotten (although i never heard it), sound plus was a step better than the standard in mine. So some of it is obviously subjective. My install of everything above plus fitting came to £1285, with £700 for the head unit, you would be surprised how good it sounds. I was!

The professionals will be able to point you in the best direction when they have a look at the car and give you the options.

Good Luck!
