My very local one (Crewe) closed some years ago and was replaced by a pound shop, because we haven't got enough pound shops in Crewe. The other two (Chester and Hanley) seem to be OK from a quick scan of that list. And I was pleased to see they're taking Bonusbonds vouchers again, so got an effectively free copy of Skyfall.
Is it really that much of a loss if it does go? Our local one has so much floorspace devoted to headphones/tablets/games consoles/2nd hand games and huge piles of discount DVD box sets (old TV series mainly) that there are very few CDs. Next to no chance of finding anything interesting unless you're a fan of things like 1D.
In terms of choice iTunes has it beat 100 times over, and for less mainstream stuff I normally buy direct from the artist or label website.

At a guess, ours is split between music CDs, DVD/Blu-ray, Games/consoles, and iPods/speakers/headphones, about a quarter each. I've always found them expensive too.
The one in Staines has all the obligatory sale posters in the window. I had a wander in- they've stopped the "2 for £10" offer and all the CD's now have 20% off- but they've all £6, so if you buy two you're saving a whole 40p over the original offer.
Another great one is Quantum of Solace on DVD, which has been £3 for as long as I can remember. Only it's gone up to £8 before a 62.5% discount is added, meaning it's now £2.99.
There is some other oddities too, like Hangover II which is £6 on DVD or £4.99 on bluray!

even playing an LP was like the tea ceremony,

today - all you do is switch the computer on - go to website, choose, pay & download 'music'.
push button on computer = play music.
just seems to be another experience/tradition in the process of being lost.
