This is a new one to me.

A very well regarded garage specialising in Renaultsport did some work for me last week, I picked the car up a week ago this evening. The work carried out is in the region of £350. At the time the owner said it was too late (about 9pm), and he would sort out the money the next day. On Thursday I rang back because I have heard nothing and he says he will send the invoice. I still have not got an invoice, and I still don't know how much I owe him exactly.

I will ring again tomorrow but this is getting beyond a joke isn't it? I just want to pay him money as now I have a £350 (possibly more) bill hanging over me. For whatever reason he seemed very relaxed on the phone about taking the money. It's a bit worrying really. What would you do?

I would make sure that I ring fenced that £350 in my account and I would wait until I got his invoice, then pay it.

You're getting free credit!
Running a business and keeping all the paperwork up to date is labour intensive.
Give the owner another week and enjoy the car in the meantime.

Relax and wait for him to send the invoice.

Maybe a visit to the GP and a chat?

So fairly normal then. Like I said, it's a new one to me.

The garage my dad uses normally takes about 6 months to get an invoice out....as others have said, put some cash aside and move on :-)

You'll be getting an invoice, that's for sure.

You're probably guessing right. He is, and I've always paid there and then in the past. Maybe he knows me enough now to leave it a while.

The mechanic I use does this. Bit more efficient now he employs someone to do that side of things, but the invoice is never available immediately. Relax. It means he trusts you. smile

I don't think I've ever encountered this and I've been to lots of garages / back street mechanics etc

Some people are like this. I have a trusted mechanic I've used for years. I always pay on time when the work is done. If he has to take it somewhere for something else, I always offer him some money up front. He looks at me like I'm crazy an d laughs, but to me it's just polite. If he's known you a while he probably trusts you and knows you'll be going back there.

Same here, my local garage is great. Often if I go in to collect the car he's not done the paperwork yet, he just says pay the next time I'm passing or the next time I'm in. It's an extra layer of trust once the garage gets to know you and gives faith in the all concerned. Besides which he knows where I live, it's small town!

It's because you have an untrustworthy face.

Or maybe it's because you go to lots of garages rather than just one.

yep - my local is the same with me... that being said they are now more mates than just "another garage". I trust them and they trust me which is a lovely situation to be in smile

On the flip side my Dad runs a small one man garage and after being invited back to collect the car on completion of the work it goes something like this:

Garage - " there is your keys sir, and the bill for £X"
owner - "that's great thanks for getting it done so quick, i'll pop in with the money at some point".

Most of the time its a well known local so they wont risk getting a reputation in a small village.

1. Possibly

2. Generally I go to the same couple, but I've never encountered it anywhere.

The only time that has happened was when I used a mechanic who was also a friend, but then obviously if you are actual friends in real life then yes I can understand it, but the OP didn't give the impression that was the case.
