Windscreen replacement
Discussion
The wifes fiat panda (61 plate) has got a huge crack in the windscreen.
We are insured with admiral and have a reasonable no claims bonus
So what will be the cheapest and least hassle way of getting the windscreen replaced without having to end up in the hands of a muppet?
And we are near Aberdeen Scotland so can't call on the services of Glassman

Last time I checked my Admiral policy documents, there was a £75 excess on windscreen replacement. However, Calling out a small local firm to fit a windscreen and paying out of your own pocket is likely to be at least double that.
P.S. you don't have to use AutoGlass if you go through insurance, why not read some reviews for local firms?

I didnt have windscreen cover so I had mine done at National Windscreens. Cost me £132 inc VAT.

In short, there is a three year rule by which you can have an OEM glass fitted. You also have the option of taking it to your own preferred supplier but this might mean paying for it yourself and subsequently claiming for reimbursement from your insurer (minus any deductibles).
PHer zapmc has had first hand experience of this.
If I can be of any further assistance, give me a shout.
ahh got you now, just a quick one about what is covered
I have a big swirly scratch right in my line of sight which was done when the wife rubbed some dried on bird crap off with a pan scourer { i know, i know}
could i say this was done on the road and get it replaced on the insurance or do they only cover chips cracks etc, i realise i would have to contribute to the cost

Damage. The difference will be between what is construed as damage and how it is defined in your policy, or in the words the insurer uses. I have a big swirly scratch right in my line of sight which was done when the wife rubbed some dried on bird crap off with a pan scourer { i know, i know}

Don't confuse losing your ncb with loading the premium. You can still get charged more on renewal because of a claim even if your ncb is intact. Plus you will be obliged to declare the claim to every insurer for the next 5 years. Different insurers will vary as to their procedures so always check first. zap mc said:

I've not heard of anyone having to declare a windscreen replacement, is that really true?loko said:

can't imagine that caused the scratch, i use them to clean my glasses all the time, and i can imagine windscreen glass is a little tougher than ikea stuffging84 said:

It's very common, I see it all the time, what people forget is that with every worm a bird eats, it also eats the dirt surrounding it which contains grit particles, so when you try and rub it off your action is similar to lapping a valve in! The characteristic bird mess mark is a bald patch the shape of the dropping surrounded by a patch of scratches in either a swirl or at 90 degrees to each other depending on the removal attempt. The scratches will also be of varying depths due to the different sizes of grit contained in the dropping. The light scratches will polish out but the deep ones are moe stubborn and may require grinding first to remove entirely. The best way to get it off is with a pressure washer. Any attempt with a sponge risks transferring the grit to the rest of the glass or paintwork. Don't confuse losing your ncb with loading the premium. With online quotes you even have "windscreen claim" as a field in the drop down box of some online insurers when declaring your claims history. Insurers will always ask " have you had a claim in the last 5 years?" by not declaring it you are potentially invalidating your policy by withholding disclosure. We all know an insurer will try and wriggle out of a claim, why give them the opportunity?! If they catch you out your insurance record could be adversely affected as a marker will be put on your CUE database file which may affect future ratings or your ability to find cover.
