Polite Thieves??

Morning all, had a very strange experience this morning.
Left the house for work at 6:15 but noticed there were a pair of MTB wheels placed on the roof rack of my car (24" rims by the looks)
Took them in the house to ask the gf if she'd put them there and she had no clue where they came from. I quickly checked the shed round the side of the house which was all locked up.
Just spoken to the gf now and she's checked the shed, her cube MTB is missing both wheels but apart from that everything else is in there including my MTB and my roadie.
I'm very confused...clearly someone has broken in but why would you take the time to remove 2 wheels and leave 2 smaller ones on the roof of my car????
Anyone had any similar experiences of this type of theft? First port of call for me is to review the shed security and change the lock. Not sure what else to do though, worth reporting to the police I guess.
Any advice very welcome!

Still report it to the Police. A few weeks ago I (stupidly) left my car unlocked all night, the following morning clearly someone had been through it, glove box left open, boot not shut properly etc, nothing taken, not even a sat nav that was clearly visible. Only a few days later after talking to a neighbour did we realise lots of cars were 'opened' but nothing taken.
Police took it very seriously & after a few days had built up a good picture of what happened & someone was arrested shortly after. If you don't report it they don't know what's going on.

Even stranger, it looks like the wheels that were left were the ones off the gf's bike and not smaller ones as i'd originally thought!
So...someone carefully broke into the shed, took the effort to remove the wheels from the bike, locked the shed back up with everything else in place, removed the tyres and tubes then left the wheels on my roof.
My head hurts.....

Good job you noticed before she tried riding it otherwise she could have been in a whole world of pain!
About 10 years ago I came out to 4 bolts very neatly laid out on the roof of my Vectra, given that bits were always falling off I assumed that some kind soul had been following me, noticed them fall off, picked them up and put them on the roof for me to put back insitu when I figured out where they had came from.
Wrong! - I started the car and a Massey Ferguson rumble from the rear end altered me to a missing rear exhaust box - some bugger had nicked it but obviously didn't need to bolts! Bib thought it was hysterical, but apparently used to happen quite a bit as the old Verctra SRI's used to have huge stainless steel rear box.

I had two MTBs stolen out of my shed last year. I have vastly upgraded my level of security since then. I had been very relaxed because I live in such a nice quiet neighbourly village. Anyway I went to my shed one saturday morning to head out on a ride and found the door wide open with both bikes missing. I found it an unbelievable sight. The main reason I found it incomprehensible was that every time I try to get the bikes out of the shed I always knock numerous other things all over the floor in the process. These thieves hadn't moved a thing, if anything it actually looked tidier!! The only evidence they had been there was the absence of the bikes and the locks/door padlock (presumably taken with them to avoid potential dabs/dna)..no damage to shed or anything else taken despite much other valuable gear in the shed
These are worrying stories and unfortunately the world we live in now 
- weird one from the OP - cant even fathom the reason for that myself, unless its some twisted prank, but most bizarre !!
I'd be proper sad if my bikes ever got nicked, not so much for the value, but they are my TOYS !!
Hope something nasty happens to the thieves real soon, in a Karma type way.... onwards and forwards!!

Strange indeed, maybe they were planning to steal the bikes and your car, break into shed get bikes out, place wheels on, lift onto car, break into house get keys, and off with bike and car maybe?
Someone at our work had his bike nicked from outside his house, the bike was so crap and falling to bits they returned it to the same spot 2 days later!!

The thought did enter my mind. But then why go to the effort of just taking the tyres? Weirdos! I've stopped thinking about it now as i'll just go round in circles. Since the incident, i've fixed the outside security lights, upgraded the padlock to a serious one and added another fixed to a hasp and staple.
I realise all you can really do with a shed is make a thieves life difficult and hope they can't be bothered. If they really want to get in they will.
TBH it's been a bit of a wakeup call, will be more vigilant with house/shed security in the future. As has been said, it's a shame to have to go to silly lengths!
