Hello,

Apologies on the pathetic title, but the topic should prove to be more interesting.

It occurred to me while watching the coverage at Geneva that the manufactures, while in the pursuit of surpassing their rivals, just keep raising the bar in what we thought was possible. I am amazed at the technological advancements that have been made in the past few years. To risk not just waffling on, just look at these three examples to start with;

What you see here are the new flagship models for each brand, the tour de force to be reckoned with but they all arrive at the aim of being a hypercar in different ways;

The Porsche has gorgeous Martini livery, but is more complex than any car that has worn those colours before. This video explains it in great deal, but who would have thought that we would see a day where a part-electric car would be capable of doing the sprint to sixty in 2.8 seconds, have 700-odd bhp, lap the toll road in Germany in a very impressive time while also returning sensible economy. The breadth of talent these cars can achieve is incredible. We then have the LaFerrari which, although it has a silly name, brings new additions to the supercar game like what we saw on the homepage the other day. The full spec and info is limited at the moment but from what I gather it will also be a hybrid but have a combined figure of 963bhp and have a whole host of clever aero. The next showstopper is the McLaren P1 brings, among many other things, a drag reduction system that similar idea to what was available on the Formula One cars over the past few years. All the while, we cannot forget the level of detail that goes into each Pagani Huyara or the research and development that goes into the Koenigsegg brand in their quest to build the best.

The possibilities are endless and to get back on topic, how far can we go in regards to technology in cars?! I find it really interesting and we could actually go down many avenues from this one question.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter. smile

If people knew where technology was going to go, it would probably have already gone there. smile

The designs and styling are very much aided by the constantly advancing CAD and CAM technologies and I love the shapes of many of these latest models. The driving aid technologies can be labelled as safety aids but my feelings are that they lead drivers in to a false beliefe in their owns skills and the cars ability.

Still prefer my simple English Sports car TVR Tuscan for driving experience.

Seems to me that there is oportunity to produce more exciting sports cars that more people can afford instead of super and hyper cars.

Are these true "innovations" in technology or just continuous improvement/added complexities?

I've yet to see any of the above cars in the flesh, however all will cost around about £1m. Even at the most ambitious of dreams, that's a bit of a stretch, so therefore I just don't see any as "dream" cars. Maybe that's why they don't stir my soul, particularly.

Surely you can respect them though as the tech will soon filter down, quicker than you expect in some instances! smile

I must admit, they dont really grab me. I like my supercars more road racer esque, low weight bare essentials. Think 33 Stradale, F40 (although rather chubby compared to the 33 wink ), Mclaren f1.

In my, weird and nerdy view, they shouldnt be looking at power, rather power to weight. A car with 900kg and a Ferrari 458 engine will match or even beat the power to weight ratios of the cars mentioned. Although the creature comforts that wont be on the car wont bother most 'car' people, most slick micks and russion billionaires wont like the alancantra, bucket seats or the lack of sat nav.

Of course not every one wants an F40, they want something to swan around Monaco or London in, but as a Petrol head, I dont care about that aspect of cars. But as Ive said, Im nerdy, not in any way normal, I dont worry about headline grabbing BHP numbers, nor top speed.

Buy a GT for the day to day, a stripped out 'LMP1 car for the road', when you want a hoon.

Still, its an impressive as a technical exercise, the power out puts are mental, but the low numbers of cars, low miles they will cover, is their mpgs important? No not really.
