Thoughts on Mercedes GL-class?
Discussion
I put up a post about Land Cruiser Amazons yesterday, but it got me thinking - the Mercedes GL420 isn't a rock-hopper, but for my needs (4wd, 7 seats, comfort) it might be good. I've not driven one yet (planning on doing that in the next week) but I'd welcome opinions from any PHer who has owned one with their good/bad thoughts.
Oh, and is the 4.0 diesel in the 420 significantly better than the 3.0 litre in the 320? Sounds daft to ask, but I was surprised at how little difference there was with the 3.0 vs 4.2 diesels in the A8.

I ran one as a demo for 3 months back on 06/07. They're laugh out loud fast for something of that size; the engine is just lovely - although a little on the thirsty size, I think I was probably getting about 22mpg out of it.
Very nice bits of kit IMO, incredibly well specced, fantastic ride quality (airmatic is standard on the 420) and pretty well priced at the moment.
There's not a huge amount of difference between the 320 and 420 in terms of performace, but the standard spec on the 420 is a fair bit better and I don't imagine the price difference between them is huge? Go and have a go in one would be my suggestion.

I quite liked the ones I've driven despite being a LR man. If you can get the 350CDI version with 265bhp and 457lb-ft it's pretty much as fast as the 420 but more frugal. The interior is a let down at this price point though, but as long as that doesn't bother you they are worth a look.
I've driven the 420 and have to say it was a hoot. Loved the gadget tally!
The owner covered moon miles in it travelling all over the UK for work so comfort was a big factor. Was really chuffed with it and as he tended to bimble reckoned it wasn't too thirsty. Proved very reliable too.
The amount of kit he could cram in it was very impressive too.
