Autosport - F1 booklet

A decent attempt at a thorough briefing for the coming season by Autosport this week. I say Autosport but it would appear to be more of an advertorial for Sky. If you can ignore the perpetual plugs it does cover all the drivers, the cars, the circuits and all the Sky presenters.

Guess who paid for the print run and photographic prints, Sky! Their vast F1 budget has stopped them bidding for additional sports rights, ie Heineken Cup and Aviva Premiership etc.

I wish that this meant that I would get to see the occasional Tigers game on the BBC or ITV, but no doubt ESPN will swallow it up

Next season it is all on BT Sport. Highlights on ITV 4.

I assume that the booklet is the same one that is in Formula One magazine?

Might also explain the decision reported on F1 Fanatic website to move the Sky F1 Channel into the Sky Sports package, although existing subscribers will apparently be unaffected.

Very unimpressed with Autosport this week. There are 13 pages of actual content not relating to F1. There are an equal number of pages advertising Sky. And then there's the 20 repeats of "Anthony Davidson - Sky F1 Analyst".

Autosport was the first literature I ever read as a child - it's been part of my life since I can first remember. This was the worst edition I can recall. I hope it's a one-off for their F1 season preview. In association with Sky.

Did I mention Sky? I'll just recap: Sky.

Motorsport is still the best magazine out there re F1. Detailed interviews, hugely talented writers and no bull.

Motor Sport is the sport's journalistic overlord. No matter how often I ask they won't give me a job. Did get a letter published though.

I started to count the "Anthony Davidson - Sky Analyst" plugs as well but gave up in despair.

I thought, though, that Sky bits ignored, there was a fair bit of information. As an advertorial it wasn't too bad. I take the point about other motor sports.

Sky will want to recoup their investment in F1 soon enough. They'll go back to a charging rate equivalent to when they did it last time. Enjoy F1 while you may for free.

I was a subscriber - there was me and some bloke in the Midlands I think. A group of mates came round my house each race and we had terrestrial on one TV, the smaller, and satellite on the other, the bigger. By the fourth or fifth race we all but ignored Sky and we swopped TVs.

When my mum fell pregnant my dad had to choose which subscription to drop - Motor Sport or Autosport. He dropped Motor Sport so I was given Autosport to read as a child. I was writing race reports from trips to Oulton Park during my first year at primary school. No wonder I'm such a socially inept nerd now.

Was a great magazine, hasn't been for some time.
I've got copies from 15-20 years ago; and they're far superior. Proper coverage given to non F1 categories, and special supplements for F1 season, BRC, BTCC, Le Mans, BritshGP, RACRally, etc

At least they were honest enough to admit that when they put the BTCC on the front the sales dropped significantly......

There is obviously some symbiosis going on between Autosport and Sky now. Jon Noble was on the F1 Show this week and Mark Hughes seems to be up in the commentary box as a silent race analyst quite often as well.

I realise F1 sells magazines but there is also F1 Racing magazine for that. Autosport should have authoritative coverage of all race series, with F1 a constituent. It all started going downhill when Roebuck left.

It is utterly dire; written for people who only watch televised motorsport. The stuff I like - racing I can see live- gets shunted to a few bite size factoids on back pages- poor old Marcus Pye deserves more. They tell me what crappy South American circuit is hosting the next round of the Venezuelan pick up challenge or wahtever but hardly a bloody word about what I can see in UK- apart from BTCC. I stopped buying it after being presented with a page of tweets from drivers.FFS...

Apart from Kevin Turner and Marcus Pye, Club Autosport seems to be used as a springboard for younger journalists into F1, which is a shame: Edd Straw; Damien Smith; Ben Anderson; etc.

I think Motorsport News does a reasonable job of covering the club end of things but a newspaper-type publication is, by its very nature, a less easy thing to handle and read.

Already happening as they are moving the F1 channel in to the Sky Sports subscription. Won't affect existing subscribers .........yet!
