Do all Auto's have a kick down?
Discussion
So from my understanding all autos have a kick down button behind the accelerator.
howvwer i test drove 2 FJ cruisers this week and one seemed to not have a kick down.
i would plant my foot, it would rev to 7k and change gear, it didnt drop a gear, and i couldnt even feel a kick down behind the accelerator.
O test drove another one a few days before and im certain there was a kick down.
Any ideas or thoughts??

I think it is just a vitualised button to give the feel, they are just using throttle position message from engine ECU sending message to powertrain ECU. Was it an automatic or automated manual? All cars I have driven have had a kickdown apart from Mercedes automated manual.
Its an auto.I believe they only come in Auto only, with all the 4 wheel drive gear box also.
But this was just in town driving, using normal gear box.
My 135i had one.
If you floored it to the button it might drop a gear depending on the current speed/reves.
But if you pushed onto the button it would drop a gear or two and go into flat out acceleration mode.
Maybe not a button, maybe just a change of pressure on the pedal; but you get the idea.

My 525 had one, it actually made the car slower (knackered turbo + high revs in a diesel = no go)
I thought this in a friends C220 cdi Coupe.Your pressing on and its accelerating quite well. You then put your foot to the floor and it drops down a cog and revs to 4.5k which makes it stop accelerating whilst it fumbles about trying to go up a gear again which it has already come from. Pointless.

Does anyone have experience with this with an FJ cruiser.
I know a few owners are on here, but they dont really sell them in the UK
I off-road in one when I get the chance and hadn't really thought about kickdown, it just does it. Shouldn't be a problem on any of them as they all have the same engine and gearbox regardless of spec iirc. The gearbox reacts pretty quickly to a request for more shove in ours.I know a few owners are on here, but they dont really sell them in the UK
