But not the USA

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/03/07/ford-mustang-to...

The Yanks are sticking with the V6 and V8 line-up while we will be getting a turbo 4 and V8 here in the UK

Personally I don't see the point of the 4 banger.

It won't be any more efficient than the 6 pot in real world driving and makes less power less reliably.

And a mustang with a 4 cylinder... it's just not American. People would buy the mustang because they want something different here in Europe.

We're not getting the V8 in the UK - it's only in LHD markets in Europe. We have to make to with the 4-pot or possibly a V6.

The Fox body Mustang was available with a 2300cc 4 cylinder engine.

New Mustang with 310hp from the Ecoboost 4(possibly)

I was under the impression that the Mustang was going to be marketed as the Capri here? Or has this gone out of the window?

ah yes the fox body... only saved from utter failure by that nicely tunable 5.0 V8 smile

I think that would be unlikely. The Mustang has a slightly better brand image than the Capri.

Maybe they should rename it the Ford Cow

I would just love to see the Mustang for sale here, it will still have 300 bhp for gods sake, how much do you need.

Even a four cylinder is a bold move for Ford as all that really sells well here now are tiny 1.0 city cars and frigging diesels, as a country we will pay thirty grand for a car to avoid VED and get 45 mpg, a petrol engine of over 1.6 litres is considered a raging, fuel sucking beast by most of the public these days so one of 2.3 (Gasp) litres, with a turbocharger (Oh my god) that does 22 mpg (Passes out), what would a 5.0 400 odd bhp 15 mpg engine do to them, never mind one with a supercharger ?

Ok, petrolheads get it and will deal with the fuel cost but the normal, non petrolhead public, who still like interesting car may fancy something a bit "Yee Haw" and a bit different, that is still fast enough for most occasions, they too will use the man (or woman) maths of the Euro mpg to convince a skeptical spouse that it is actually a sensible choice, the euro mpg figures of the V8 will still be pretty dire even if in day to day use there wont be that much in it.

If they keep it relatively light, say 1450 kilos it will be a very quick car, potentially with some scope for more power via remaps etc.

400hp and a V8 soundtrack.

It's a sports car at the end of the day and BMW/Audi/Lexus/Jaguar/Land Rover all sell V8 and V6 equipped cars.

Why can't ford?

Not very PH, but they need a diesel option to have any success over here.

I was given a Mustang rental by Hertz out in Texas about 9 years ago.

Even the locals scoffed as they said it was a cheap 4-cylinder job, and not a proper Mustang.

It was truly dreadful, and handled so badly that at one point I got a puncture and didn't even notice for quite a while.

I would have no problem with a IL4 turbo motor as long as it is priced correctly. What is the likely competition? Scirocco, TT, Megane Coupe?

A 250+bhp RWD coupe with usable rear seats, cheap servicing, and a dealer of every street corner. What's not to like?

Am sure 400 bhp is possible from that unit, a friend has a Focus ST with the 2 litre variant which is already up to 300 with minor mods, the Focus RS went to 400 quite easily.

I believe the Ecoboost sounds quite nice, ok, it isnt a V8 but I think he V8 noise is a bit over eulogised anyway, the Mustang I drove sounded really nice but I am sure can make the 4 cyl sound good as well, the V8 had some daft thing that lets noise into the cabin under throttle, seemed very artificial, I would do away with it and have it all the time, it was weird,

a 2.3 litre 4 banger with 400 reliable horses and no turbo lag?

Not seeing it my friend frown

By all means ford, sell a compact rwd sports car with a 4 banger in the front spinning the rear wheels.

But call it a capri.

It's not a mustang to me personally without that American V8.

The V8 is a very important ingredient IMO, but it's still going to be a very appealing car even with a 4-cylinder.

We no longer have a 3-door Focus ST, the RS looks a bit 'barry-fied' (I imagine there will be another RS soon?), the Ford Cougar is long gone and I think there is room for a Coupe from Ford.

A (possibly cheaper) more powerful, bigger, more practical GT86/BRZ? But with ~ 50% more power...

A lot of countries in Europe still base their car tax on engine size. So a 2 liter ecoboost would be massively cheaper for me than a 3.whatever liter V6 given more or less the same performance and consumption.

From that perspective a 4 cylinder Mustang makes a lot more sense, even if this doesn't really apply to the UK market.

Nope, it's a muscle car not a sports car. Take the engine away and put a 4 pot in it and I wouldn't know what to call it. It would no longer be a muscle car.

It does if you bring CO2 into it sadly frown
