Reading all about the Huhne case, which I realise is a slightly different issue to actually speeding - in that the trial is about lying but thinking about the sentencing (yet to be announced) Obviously their true crime was lying in court which is different and should carry a custodial sentence. I wonder if they'd just owned up straight away if they'd be here.

It just got me thinking, I remember my parents swapping some points a couple of times when I was growing up (my mum has a bit of a heavy right foot) and I wondered how common it actually was? I might consider taking points for a partner if they were going to lose their license because of it, but then a part me thinks - really they should lose their license as punishment (but the punishment would also affect me!?)

I know a couple who've swopped points. The bloke would have only gone up to 6 points too.

It's an interesting topic but I doubt that you'll get many people admitting to an offence that carries a more or less mandatory gaol sentence.

I guess that in itself is another debate - should the punishment for PCJ be driven by the punishment for the offense that's involved? eg: if guidelines for offense = £5k fine, PCJ related to this could be £10k fine. Offence usually carrying sentence of 2y gaol => 4y gaol for related PCJ etc.

I know someone who claimed his wife was driving after being caught by a speed camera

The safety partnership sent him a photo of a man driving (him) and politely asked him if he was sure his wife was driving at the time.

Don't be silly, only criminals and the great unwashed ask their wife/husband take points. PH answer

It happens often and I agree with it. Points are silly and there's no indication it has anything to do with bad driving

I beg to differ.

Never been in the siuation.

If my GF was on 9 points though and got a NIP would I take them to save her career? Of course I would.

Or maybe some feel like they were forced to do so by their oh-so-important DH? I would urge anyone that is tempted to do this to really think about it, you might find you get more than you bargained for.

I offered to take points once, but it was declined. Otherwise I've never had or caused points.

In that situation I'd take them to save me a 60 mile a day commute to drop her off and pick her up, I did it for 4 months when we first moved in together and it was hell.

DH?

It is true that you'd have think long and hard before doing it as the consequences could be potentially life changing.

This for me too, I just think the hassle of being the one driver would be far too much of a faff and I'd offer to take them.

Its what surprises me more about this case, I mean Huhne could have just admitted it was him, been banned for a while and just used the 'ministerial Prius' for a few months. Silly.

Would you just keep on taking her points until you got banned youself whilst hoping at some point she'd realise what she was doing wrong?

If you manage to rack up 9pts then surely at some point realisation must dawn that you need to slow down/pay more attention?

Maybe he thought that was "far too much of a faff" also?

I don't.

The drivers who crash the most, the elderly and the under 25s, are those who have the least points. You can't measure safety in miles per hour; anyone who says otherwise is either an easily brainwashed fool or has a vested interest in the revenue camera industry.

I was thnking this too. Surely the PH response is that the GF gets a good slap at 6 points and learns to drive properly.

More seriously, if you are reliant on a car for your livelihood and you rack up 12 points, it's time to take some responsibility for your actions.

Yes because good drivers don't need speed limits.

If it weren't for it being an offence fabricated by a industry that profits from penalising people, with a vested interest in defining as much as possible to be an "offence", there'd be a case for moralities.
