Driving mirror glass

Sorry if this has been covered before. I am having real trouble getting mirror glass to stay attached. Have cleaned all old adhesive off and tried using spongy number plate attaching double sided tape but twice now the blighter has come adrift! I am putting the plastic bracket on the car and then pressing the glass on as it is easier to line up. Any one have any tips to help?
