I would definately recommend taking off the discs and inspecting the shoes rather than just adjust through the access holes. Mine had detached due to poor adjustment and would have wrecked the discs had I not caught it in time. My symptoms were just a poor handbrake and occasional scraping noise. I also found the dealer had just tightened up the cable to reduce the slack rather than manually adjust each wheel. Once I replaced the shoes and adjusted properly they have been faultless in six years.
