3K What Car....
Discussion
Mate is looking for a new car when his current one inveitably fails it's MOT at the end of the month.
He's got 3K to spend
Says he's not too fussed about petrol consumption as he doesn't do a great deal of miles and only drives one week in 4 for work.
Although he lives on his own he wants something with 4 seats and a bit of room
Wants something reliable.
He's 29 clean license etc so insurance shouldn't be too much of an issue
I've not spent mroe than a grand on a car for a few years and I've been lucky with shedding over the past few years so I'd be tempted to steer him in a similar direction. For his 3K I've suggested a Octavia VRS or an Accord Type R although I've not driven the latter.

I'd agree with the 330 Ci or even a 4 door. If your mate's not that fussy about bodystyle, then get the best car, rather than fixating on number of doors.
Absolutely, looks like it'd suit him down to the ground and some good choice at £3k. Expect a 28-30mpg average in an even town/motorway split.http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/s...
Picked the first one of those around £3000, I love mine!

Nahhhh

Thanks for the replies, will mention the list when I see him tomrrow.
I expected the 330 to pop up, seems to be pound for pound one of the most popular overall packages at this sort of bracket. Also worth considering a 5 series maybe? The Impreza is an interesting one, reckon the running costs of the the S8 might put hime off, S220 I've always liked too.

I would too, just the first one I picked but it looks really nice.
I have an E46 328i myself and it's a stunning all-rounder, I can't think of anything that can come close at the sub-£2k I paid. A refined and quiet cruiser with all the comfort and toys you could need, kerb appeal and respectability, but an absolute howling tail-wagging hooligan when you push it on a B-road. Perfect

Think I'd have a look at the ST220 in that price range. Can probably get a 330ci/i for under £3k now as well.
This. I have had both. Largely a matter of taste as to which you will enjoy more.
The 330 I had first, it's better in terms of build quality, interior, low-down torque, overall weight distribution / balance, reliability... the ST220 has a nicer gearchange, better steering, revs more eagerly, sounds better, is a bit more punchy at the top of the rev range than the BMW is, and is much less common! The 330 will probably get from 0 to 60 slightly quicker, but the next 60 from there belongs to the ST.
