If its that style try a motor factors thats been around a while, they may still have the gear? I used to get a set of those loose, paint the plates black & digits silver then assemble them. Loads cheaper than the pressed ali ones.

Google is your friend.

Companies that make "show" plates often do a wide range that includes vintage/classic styles.

You will generally be able to design your own requirements on-line on their web-site.

ah, a much debated and misunderstood subject

yes you can buy them, yes you can use - see below

the standard plates that were on the car then can no longer be ordered new for road use because in 2001 the law changed and the lettering and spacing had to conform

the standard plates that were on the car then are allowed for road use if they were fitted before 2001 or for show use off the roads

see - http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_...

for those that like to debate this pick your way through this lot smile

not quite, it's for vehicles manufactured after 1st January 1973 so '73 on (unless the car was manufactured but not registered before '73)

there was also the style where the number were pressed through the plate but I’m not certain if they came later

only recently I almost deleted the info I had stored which I put in the last post as I'd not seen the subject come up again after a big debate here or on a another forum, I wanted some raised stick on characters so done a quick bit of research then but some wouldn't believe it and the most clear and useful leaflet on it had gone out of print (well the link to the PDF anyway)

Try Framptons: http://www.pl8s.co.uk/

They made me yellow and white reflective plates with riveted on black lettering for my 1977 Manta - they came new from the dealer at that time

Cheers guys.

So any idea what would have been fitted when new. Pressed, rivet raised or reflective or could it have been any of them?

Don't worry about the legal side of things will be show only.

Oh will be on a Ford if that makes a difference.

These were fitted to my 1977 Ford Capri on delivery. Like the Manta, above. My father had some made in 1971 for the Morris 1000 van I still own. They were in this style, too.

You should by now be convinced?

Most cars had the reflective yellow and white aluminium plate with black plastic raised characters attached to them at that time, but quite a few cars had the reflective yellow and white plates similar to those used through the Eighties and up until 2001. These were called "wipe clean" at the time IIRC and were more expensive. The 'wipe clean' plates tended to be fitted to more expensive cars such as a Jaguar or Mercedes, whilst a Ford or Vauxhall would be more likely to have the plates with raised characters.

I worked in a spares shop in the late Eighties that still did the old plastic letter number plates.
A time consuming job of hole punching the plate in the right places, adding the letters and star washers, all for £2.99...

the raise characters I remember, mostly from see the Sweeney or Minder reruns but I'd never heard of "wipe clean" plates which makes sense as I've never been in Jag type of car league

Of course it's remarkably difficult to work out whether those plates were fitted before 2001 since there was no requirement to date mark them. I wonder whether anyone has been prosecuted for this?

I would think you'd have very bad luck to be prosecuted for a set of plates that are otherwise legal except for being show plates. For a start, how would anyone prove that they haven't been on the car since before 2001?

My 1976 Vauxhall had pressed aluminium reflective plates I believe (that is, I have a set of very old plates of that style that were on it when I bought it), by the sound of it those described as 'wipe clean' earlier. You can quite easily get them, but it's hard to get the correct font now, a lot of plate makers don't have the dies any more.

I very much doubt anyone would be caught with pre-2001 plates on a classic almost same way most people are not caught speeding

for the wipe clean plates I was thinking more like the plates we have now rather than the pressed characters

perhaps dbdb could confirm on type of plates wipe clean were

I don't know why people are suggesting you can't have period plates replaced with new period plates. Who exactly is going to know they have been replaced?

I have the raised letter type on aluminium made by Unipart. Framptons do an exact copy of them but without the unipart badge. I think these are the ones the OP is referring to.
