MOT showed recommendation for new tyres due to them only having around 3mm left. I think that equates to quite a few months before they are illegal but would you change them now?

I always change at 3mm, but I'm a bit anal about tyres.

Guess it depends on the power and if it is taken for spirited drives or just town driving.

If it was October then I probably would. Now though I wouldn't be in a rush, but would get them done by mid-summer.

Depends on the car, its uses and what tyres you buy. The wifes local town run around has ditch finders all round but changed at about 3mm, the company car has expensive tyres but the lease company won't let us change them until they are almost bald.

It varies depending on the car, the tyres and the weather conditions at the time.

Same here but I wouldn't drive the car the same over winter, keeping my speed down in wet weather.
Low levels shouldnt reduce grip in the dry? Still if budget allows then id replace sooner rather than later.

Can't see myself being comfortable with tyres below 3mm. Did think about starting another thread about this but perhaps I'll just put it here:

Dad's rear tyres were an advisory at his last MoT in May 2012, nearly 15,000 miles ago. He decided to do nothing about it, a couple of months ago he said he may need a pair of new tyres, I pointed him in the direction of blackcircles.com. He decided not to bother again. Now, with the delivery date of his new car being the 4th April he said to me that he'll just leave it. Inevitably, one of the tyres let go a couple of days ago. Now he will need to put a couple of new ones on!

3mm - that's where wet performance drops off a cliff.

Start thinking about it at 4mm, change at 3mm.
