Evening all - apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Mods - feel free to move.

So, I'm in the process of getting a new car and decided to put my existing car on eBay to see what I could get for it relative to the trade-in offer.

Within about 2 mins of putting it on I have a phone call from 2 separate blokes with what seem reasonable offers.

First guy sounds dodgy and wants to collect this evening.
Second guy sounds perfectly reasonable, asks the right questions etc. and says he will pay cash and collect tomorrow.

I might have done the wrong thing, but I choose to accept guy 2's offer, and end the listing immediately with him as the high bidder, albeit to a lower value than he is going to pay.

With the banks being closed tomorrow I cannot pay the cash in straight away, so on the assumption he turns up, I've asked him to bring proof of insurance and his drivers license, firstly so I know who he is, and secondly to prove he has a license and insurance, to which he said no problem.

Does this sound legit? Am I being stupid? Have I missed something?

I'd have left the listing running until you've got the cash in your hand. If the guy doesn't turn up tomorrow, you've got nothing.

I wouldn't do anything to the listing until you've got the money in your hand. I sell all kinds of stuff on various sites including ebay, and if I had £1 for every time someone said they were "definitely going to turn up" and then didn't, I'd be driving around in a veyron by now.

That did cross my mind, but to be fair to the guy he said he didn't want to fork out for insurance and not have the guarantee I would sell the car to him.

As reasonable as that sounds, I'd just tell him that you can't remove the listing for fear of being messed around. Although the majority of idiots call you with stuff like "eh boss wot iz ur last price", I've equally had normal, sensible sounding people who've not turned up.

Let us know how it goes. Is it much cash?

firstly, we had this recently with the whole accepting cash thing, how much you selling for?
if you are accepting cash, then you just have to thouroughly check it etc, nothing you can really do etc.
2ndly if the transaction is complete, ive always got them to sign a receipt for me, time and dated so that if anything should happen on the way home, you have proof - equally i do the same for the buyer, so that if i have got caught speeding etc in the day he doesnt get the blame for it. How far away is he coming from, find it strange the the buyer hasn't driven the car yet. As everyone else id would have left the auction running until the deal has been finalised.

yeah, but you just don't sell the car to anybody else until the time he says he'll turn up. He can get a refund on his insurance within 14 days in any case. Hope all goes well anyway

£1k.

P nuts; I will do what you suggest regarding the receipt. I'm less concerned about him not turning up & having to restart the listing than I am about the money being counterfeit for some reason.

He's coming from Milton Keynes, I'm in Bristol.

the car isnt sold until the buyer is in front of you with cash in his hand.

Never remove the ad/end the listing until the deal is done.

First one to turn up with the dosh gets it - its as simple as peas.

I've been trying to sell my 330i Sport Touring for the last 3 weeks - dealing with timewasters and test-pilots who think they can come and have a free blast in a 230 bhp car is like pulling teeth.

I wouldnt trust anyone who says they will buy it without having seen it first - not until they have actually turned up with the cash in their hand.

When it comes to selling cars "buyers" ( in the loosest sense of the word ) are liars.

They will turn up

Say it isn't as described

They will offer you 25% of the value

Probably - but if they're coming from MK I'll merrily tell them no thanks and relist it.

I think I'm going to email the guy and tell him to forget it; something that only justy clicked is that he rang my landline at home, which is not listed on eBay which slightly concerns me?

It is a guarantee if he turns up with the cash before the auction ends though isn't it, if he doesn't turn up then you're back to square one.

A guy phones you and tells you he wants your car, and will come tomorrow with cash.
You agree to the deal. Now you are going to call him and tell him to forget it?

No idea!

I've emailed him to say that I don't want to accept cash unless it is at a time of day where I can pay it straight into the bank and that I will be re-listing the car immediately.

the only thing wrong in this situation is the fact you've ended the listing for your car already.
he seems to have done nothing wrong from what i can gather.

Correct. The phone number thing is odd (on the face of it), but your number is obviously available via eBay somehow if he managed to find it as quickly as the OP suggests.

Look at it like this, does the car need any work? is it specialist etc/popular?
£1000 isnt exactly a lot for a car ie its not big money to be taking a risk on. Is your listing very detailed?
als £1000 isn't likely to be of forged notes either i shouldnt imagine, if he turns up and pays just get a receipt and move on, its not as if its a £20,000 car you could be a bout to lose out on. He may want the car for bits or to do up, he may be a specialist. Strange he got your number though?
