We have these things at work. They're the estate version with the 1.6d engine. Not the fastest thing in the world but feels just as quick as a 2.0d mondeo or similar vag engine. The build quality inside is total ste and there's been a couple of electrical gremlins but the handling and grip.....

fk me.

I simply cannot understand how a FWD pokey little estate, with a weak engine and tiny little tyres grips as well as they do. (I even had a look, i think they were stty hankook's or something)

I put one into a long sweeping corner recently, in the wet, at a very reasonable speed and it stuck to the road like it was on rails. If i didnt know better, i'd have put my money on it being all wheel drive.

It still makes me smile as to how stable it is and how much it sticks to the road. I've owned all manner of big saloons, including (what people suggest is one of the better handling FWD cars - the st220) and it outclasses them all.

Don't get me wrong, launch it around a small roundabout on full lock and it's still going to understeer a lot, but on everything else, it doesnt miss a beat.

I just cant figure it out....

We need a V8 version. Now. rolleyesscratchchin

Last year in Spain we decided to extend our stay at the family villa, so I had to take back the vile brand new corsa sport we had and get a new hire car, I was gutted to receive the keys to an i20.

My got was it better than the corsa and a genuine smile on my face hoot to rag around in, it was a superb little car.

The reason you're lost for words is because Hankook make excellent tyres. I have some V12s on my Clio and it will stick with another on the OEM Contisports no problem in dry or wet. They're a very popular alternative.

Just to add thhat Hankooks hardly fall in too the category of "stty" they are now a major manufacturer part owned by Michelin.I have used them for the last 4 years on all of my cars when replacements are needed and have enjoyed excellent grip and good mileage from them.

They also have a growing motorsport tyre division and are now the tyre used in the DTM.

If PH teaches us anything, it's that in reality, there's very little difference when choosing tyres.

Yep, Hankook are IMHO 'Top of mid range' if there is such a thing. Brilliant bits of rubber. In fairness though, your original sentiment about the i30 is still valid.
I've got a Mk1 Focus which in its day was hailed as a cornerstone in family hatchback handling. I've had an i30 a few times now as a hire car, and it would leave the Focus standing through the twisties. It's really quite a good steer. I'd even consider purchasing one if I was in the market.

Basically it's because modern cars are massively over-tyred. The "tiny little tyres" of today are the sports car tyres of yesteryear.

Have you not noticed Hyundai recently?
not since they moved their design centre next to Opel in Germany?

This thread explains why you are so surprised:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

If you're used to a 320d with 'Sunny' tyres on the rear, an i30 with Hankooks on must feel like an EVO on slicks in comparison. . . . . . .

Read the OP bro.

But then, this is PH, where your last thread is always used against you in your next thread.

I see you don't have your garage section filled in. This is a pity, as I was going to accuse you of driving a terrible car and having invalid arguments, as is the PH way.

I know, and check out the posts he's made without correct punctuation, spelling and grammar!

He's also from Somerset but I can't think of any racial slurs against people from there at the current time.

You take this too seriously.

And if we're being really anal (and lets be honest, it's a PH requirement) lets (in true PH style) check your previous topics and assault them in every way we can.

1 topic in 90 days about some stty 8bit game that nobody cares about. Hurr hurr i bet u drive a picasso aswell.

75 posts per month is equal to 2,5 per day. That sounds pretty ok to me!
