They wouldn't just stop trying to find out the cause and fix it, with it dropping that low. They really wouldn't. As such while they clearly need to communicate much, much better with you (any possibility of getting in to a ward round at some point? Sympathetic ward managers will sometimes let a family member in especially if the patient can't explain what's going on) it's likely that going private won't open up other routes of investigation.

I've had trouble with anaemia in the past (not that bad!) - your mum has my sympathy. I hope she's feeling better very soon.

You need to get there early and ask to speak to a doctor who is familiar with her case.

In my experience, they are the only ones who will give information that is of help.

Once ward rounds are over they all disappear into the world of un-obtanium and you are regarded as mad if you ask to see one in the afternoon!

I had levels of 4 due to internal bleeding. Almost dead.

It was clearly in the upper section of my guts, as my stools were black.

I had quite a few transfusions, a camera down my throat but nothing was ever found.

I did have issues that meant that my blood wasn't clotting, but regardless, they never found the "leak". In the end, it just fixed itself.

There will be a consultant in charge of your mother's case.
Ask (nicely) his/her secretary if they could give you a ring and discuss plans and next steps.

I ring relatives and explain. I also arrange meetings.

Private is not going to get you much quicker I suspect.

Weekends are very frustrating. I was in for months but weekends were the worst-no progress at all.

You have the right idea-be there at 7 am on Monday, and just wait. If they wont let you by her bed, sit in the day room on the ward.

Chocolates usually relax the rules on visiting.
