Always wondered about these, and have been reading a thread about a Ferrari, cat D.

Would you buy one? Never been sure myself, but if the car was a keeper why not?

My cars are used, so always looked at higher milers as I pile them on anyway...they just look tempting.

Savings around 25%, VOSA inspected so should be OK....

VOSA "inspected"? What's this? They just check identity do they not?

Regardless, you need to know all the damage details (documentation, pics etc.). Without that, I'd stay WELL clear.

Personally no!

I have wrote off a couple of cars in my time and i would rather scrap it than take it back if knowing it has anything more than a little cosmetic damage. Same would go for high end cars where the handling would become more important at high speeds etc.

Sounds weird but that's just me!

Personally yes if I knew the history of the damage and repair, it would make more sense to me on a keeper or a car I intended to run into the ground, as resale on both would be less important .

I would. Bought two repaired cat Ds in the past and plan on doing the same for my next car.

Providing the repairs were up to scratch then I'd buy one, had a cat D Griffith 500 a few years ago which was no different to any other TVR, I crashed that car and it was written off again as cat C this time with nothing more than cosmetic damage hadn't touched any chassis or suspension points, would have bought it back if they hadn't wanted silly money for it. The only thing is resale can be a pain if you need to cash the car in quick for any reason. Ferrari is same boat really, easily written off by an assessor who struggles to price up repairs or is worried about any unseen damage.

Depends, but probably not.

There's an NSX on sale here now (the orange one) that was written off, and the write up makes the repair seem really well done and very thorough. But a quick view of the previous owner's thread on the NSX forum reveals he thinks that the damage was bad enough that it should have been broken up. And that owner really knows the NSX.

That thread is always going to be there, like a dark cloud hanging over that car.

The only way I'd do it is if the was no chassis damage and it could be repaired and put on the road at a sustatialy cheaper price than buying a straight one, it would also have to be something I could no way afford to buy straight as well.

Yes just an identity check to ensure it's not a cut and shut, you cannot rely on vosa to tell you it's in anyway safe in this context
