Blow budget on newer car or buy slightly older and save?
Discussion
Interested in opinions on whether to spend all my available budget, or spend less and save money for remaps, mods, or general repairs that may crop up.
So my options are...
Buy a new-ish (2007/8) Seat Leon FR or Honda Civic Type R for approx £7k - around 40/50k miles.
Buy an older (2005/2006) Golf GTI with 80k plus miles - again approx £7k
Or go older still I.e. (03/04) Civic Type R, BMW, Golf, Audi, Seat Leon... - £5k ish and keep some change for repairs etc. that may very well crop up
Now I know newer cars don't necessarily mean less problems, but I'm assuming older cars with higher miles are more likely to have ongoing repairs.
So I can get a nice fun ride in any of these categories, but if I go £7k ish I'm not leaving a great deal of room for repairs or mods beyond services, mot and tax
Its all a bit of gamble depending on the car you get anyway, but if it was you, what would you do?

You can get a lot of repairs for £2k.
Older cars dont nessiarily need more repairs, yes there are consumables - brakes, tyres, cambelt, service etc which are common, and possibly a few other small things, but its pretty uncommon now to have serious parts fail within the lifespan of the car. 03/04 reg is hardly old either and assuming they have been looked after okay then no reason not to.
