02 Imprezza Wagon...odd 'tocking' noise??

Hoping the PH Subaru Massive can help me here.

Have an '02 2.0 NA Imprezza which upon arrival at home yesterday was emitting a hollowish 'tocking'[not ticking] noise. Only noticed the noise when I'd turned of the radio. Thought, that's an odd one?? Popped bonnet, turned off engine, noise continued for a couple on mins' before stopping. It was coming from under the scuttle cover between engine bay and windscreen directly behind the o/s suspension turret. Sound was regular about 1 'tock'/sec. Through the scuttle cover vent there's a component but neither owners manual nor workshop manual shows any indication as to the component. Never had this noise from any car before...and have yet to lift scuttle cover. Can anyone shed some light as to what this could be?

Thanks for the reply - not lifted cover yet as rather busy workwise. The noise has not returned but am intrigued as to what it may be. I'll be lifting scuttle cover at the weekend to 1. find out what is the component, 2. what the bloomin' noise was?!

Still perplexed as am very mechanically minded [mehanical engineer] but have not heard this noise from any vehicle before. It was like a cross between a suppressed pulsing alarm diaphram and a pulsed hydraulic sound; though don't believe any hydraulic lines run in this area. It may be the cars alarm was playing around but this works perfectly...no damp weather conditions to mess up electricals etc. It would also be good to share the fault with other Subaru drivers should they come across the same thing.

Any others input greatly received...
