Did a similar trip last year, end of August/beginning of Sep.

It was stunning - absolutely recommended.

I was a bit further over - avoided France entirely, came down through CZ and Hungary into Austria then back up along your outward route through Davos etc.

Starting from Yeovil, rather close to Bristol. Hmmm...

Looks epic, but all I can think about is the epic fuel cost!

Took the 530i, cost about 500 quid in fuel I think.

The fuel cost and expensive accomodation makes the whole thing quite expensive - you can pretty much do America with flights and a hire car for not much more - but I'd been putting it off for this reason for ages and I'm glad I just did it now. Absolutely stunning. Austria and Switerzland were particularly awesome. Austria is like Switzerland only less eyewateringly expensive for accomodation.

From Milan, try the Gothard tunnel, very direct, then Metz/Nancy no traffic. enjoy.

September would be my choice.

Weather should still be good, and most of Europe will be back to school/work.

Why not take the M? Surely you'd spend the whole trip wishing you had!

I'd echo the comments on Switzerland: beautiful scenery but eye-watering prices.

And I think I'd probably go September rather than July, but so long as you avoid August it shouldn't much difference.

With the M3?

Don't be. Life's too short. Enjoy it - they're made for that sort of trip!

It's the sort of trip the M3 was built for. Go via Germany on the way down. You'll love it.

I still don't get it. The e46 M3 is a very comfortable long distance tourer. I've done a few cross-Europe holidays with the GLW in M3s and the like.

Indeed, a quick snap from last year's jaunt with Mrs G in the passenger seat wishing I'd just get back in and drive down the mountain before the snow got any heavier...
