Greetings all.
My summer road trip this year is going to be Manchester/Belgium/Denmark/Sweden/Norway. My question is what is the best way to return to Manchester? There is no handy car ferry from Norway to UK any longer? Although one operator did say a new service may be starting in 2013. I am trying to avoid 're-tracing my steps' as much as possible, usually in Europe I can plan a circular route which means seeing something new every day.
One mad idea is a cargo plane? How crazy would the cost be for a car and four passengers? The return trip in fuel/tolls/tunnel will be a few hundred quid anyway?

There's a freight service from Brevik to Immingham, which also takes private cars. I've never used it but I've only heard good things about it. They don't take young children, which would be a positive to many! Limited availability for cars so high season books up early I believe.

I've done a road trip similar going through Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and over the border to Norway then after spending time in Norway took the overnight ferry back from Oslo to Denmark (Skagen I think) then back home. They do like to party on that boat, a Danish bacon sarnie helps the recovery process though.

last year we did the a massive road trip from north to south germany then around europe...etc etc..

the import bit for you was our start,

we took a ferry from Harwich - hook of holand (really easy and its over night so you can get a nap)
holand - Lubeck (north germany)
Lubeck - Travemünde, Lubeck, Germany
from that point we went south, but you could get a ferry from Travemunde to Norway

here is the ferry link:

we have friends in Finland and thats next years plan... England to Finland over land.

The easiest way to Norway from the UK with a car is the way we go on the Pistonheads Viking Tour:
http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyI...

As has been mentioned, Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark, and then a 200 mile drive north followed by a ferry to Norway.
This year we're leaving Essex on Tuesday afternoon and we'll be sleeping in Norway on Wednesday night, with only 3 hours driving in between.

If you're set on driving one way then i'd suggest you return via the route above, either from Larvik or Kristiansand. That way you can spend the time circumnavigating Europe and enjoying the process, and when you've had enough and simply want the simple way home you can do that smile
Plenty to see along the way if you have the time, but don't forget to plan for contingency time and a rest day here and there too.

I've used this. It's a long crossing and a service for truckers, a bit rough and ready, and costs c.£350 one way. I think I'd rather drive back.

A ferry from Norway down to Hirtshals in Denmark, then a drive to Esbjerg for a ferry from there back to the UK would be my suggestion.

OP - If you want some suggestions on good roads/locations in Norway, drop me a line wink
Hi,
I am little bit confused with that path but now i got a clear idea with the above two replies. Thanks for sharing the information..Keep it up.

I've done this as well (travelling with a toddler so Immingham route wasn't an option) and it is very straightforward. Both boats were very pleasant, overnight to Harwich, about 3-4 hours IIRC from Larvik to Hirsthals.
