My laptop, which is connected via a wireless network card to my main pc, has developed a weird habit.

On occasions, my Norton firewall comes up with an alert that tells me that a programme (generally the last one i have opened) such a s excel, autoroute, word etc, is trying to access the Internet. I have 3 choices, permit, block, or block always.

I choose block. It tries for a couple of more times and then gives up.

If I later use Outlook express to get emails, the 3 accounts I have set up all fail to connect. If I close down OE and reopen it, it works fine.

But maybe 1/2 hour later will not work again first try.

Very strange and intermittent.

I have run adaware, emptied cookies and temp internet files, restored my system 'to an earlier time' etc to no real avail.

I am reluctant to format the hard drive but things are looking that way...

Any ideas?

Hi dude!

It sounds like Norton is being Nortan again, i dont want to bend the rules PistonHeads but I would suggest you uninstall Norton, it will leave alot of mess behind but you can delete that manually and install McAfee Firewall or if you have Windows XP, install SP2 which has a built in Firewall.

Applications have a habit of constantly trying to access the internet even when you tell the Firewall not to allow it. However, Norton seems to be confussed and blocks anything from accessing the Internet.

Dear God no!

ZoneAlarm is widely known for hanging and crashing on a regular basis and needing to be reinstalled. Their last release was very shoddy indeed.

Had ZoneAlarm for a year (even bought the Pro version) but changed to Kerio when it all got too annoying. Should have changed ages ago.

i have Windows Xp pro with SP2 installed. This prob. was evident before the upgrade. I have already uninstalled Norton and reinstalled.

I have noticed that the programmes are trying to access on of my email accounts host (hotchilli.net).

sp2, thats your "problem"

sp2 has massive effects on your firewall settings

nothing is wrong as such, just sp2 doing its thing

for the record, i am waiting a while before i update, sp2 is causing problems

Beg to differ. I have been running ZoneAlarm Pro for a few years now (upgrading as soon as new versions are released) and it has never given any trouble, not even the infamous version 5 - It's even fine after upgrading to XPSP2.

Yes I've read all the reports, but it never happened to me. As they say, a dissatisfied customer will tell at least 10 other people but a happy customer rarely passes good info on.

Zone alarm, run it on about ten machines over three or four machines. Never had a problem. Always use the latest one and you'll be fine.

I always use the free one in conjunction with SpyBot's ad blocking immunization. Works very well for me.
