ETA: I got one of these starters recently and it starts my car fine from cold. For the price, they don't want your starter in exchange, so I also got my original starter refurbished by them too. So now I have a spare. Starting my car from hot is a different story as it has higher compression, so it always struggled ti initially turn over.
I'd happily swap my two starters for one 4kw one!

The original was a 2.5kW unit, the later ones don't have the same poke. I've never had an issue with the cranking power of the motor, but solenoid has certainly been a source of grief recently.
I'm trying to source an alternative starter (will probably take a while), would there be demand?

so wosp do a new denso based 2.3kw starter. that's handy if you dont have a tilton original. is that the most powerful on the market then i wonder?
Steve : there's a few people with cars that don't turn over well when hot, so you might be on to something getting a batch of really good starters made. take deposits first though, people have a habit of saying they'll have something then disappear when it's time to put hand in pocket ..

Id be interested. I know my cars on its third in 26k. So having a back up is very handy.
I find it difficult to believe that these starters are failing due to over use or being undersized for the engine.I would have thought that there must be something else more sinister causing the failures and I would guess it was the temperature that they reach being fitted between the exhausts. This is also supported by the number of solenoids failing.
At one track day I saw the mechanic who works on the Top gear TV series cars (big bloke normally with his arse hanging out of his trousers) pouring water over the starter motor on an AJP fitted in a MK1 escort, the starter was so hot clouds of steam poured off it so they are definatley getting to hot and this is what I think destroys them.
Ive just made up a thermal gasket to go between the starter and the bell housing and also intend to cover the starter with a thermal jacket. Mine has always been a pain to start when hot so I will let you know how I get on with it.

That'll be Steve Howard

I used to wrap them in exhaust heat bandage at one time, but they still failed. I stopped doing that as it apparently had little effect. The starter has very little leverage over the engine because the ring gear is a small diameter too. It either needs more gear reduction in the starter or a beefier motor?
