Girlfriend's Mum is after a new car to replace her aging Toyota Corolla.

Criteria:
Size isn't massively important, a small hatchback is fine
Needs to be reliable with decent economy (does less than 10kpa so not so important) & cheap tax (although not so important)
Under £2k (ideally less)
Fairly reliable (they generally don't maintain their cars so well!)
Rugged - she lives down a private road covered in pot-holes. My ZT struggles to get down there without grounding out, so something with a higher ground clearance would be handy.

I originally thought of a Octavia 4x4 but they seem quite expensive. Suggestions?

Not very economical, though, but what are they like reliability wise?
