A friend and I intend to go to Monza for the GP in September. We're thinking of taking crap Italian cars, preferably with lots of heartbreak built in as they explode on the hard shoulder. In my head the route will involve Route Napoleon, Stelvio, and all of the other good stuff, so epic helmsmith potential is vital.

Currently on my list:

Fiat 126
Fiat X/19
Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo
Alfa 156 V6 24V Lusso

Any thoughts?

You won't get an X1/9 for that kind of money. A 126 is far too slow and cramped.

156 is a good call. But also look at the 166.

Fiat Coupe could be a good buy - but make sure it doesn't need a cambelt.

I'd go with a 16V or 20V turbo if you can find one

Or this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lancia-Dedra-2-0ie-/2711...

There's a potentially cheap Fiat Barchetta on Ebay .

It's an auction at £650 last time i looked but it's also been off the road for 5 years

so will need some TLC before an MOT pass.

Can't see it going over £1K with doubts over it's fitness.

Steering wheel on the correct side for continental driving.

A 156 with a 6 pot, it'll feel like it's worth 5 times the amount you paid. Lovely place to be.

A GTV or a Coupe would be the must fun.

A 156 would make the most sense.

Marea HLX or Bravo HGT, same 5 pot engine as the coupe, but for the price of a decent night out!!
