It's snowing so everyone has taken the car to Tesco... I back into the (at the time) only available space in between 2 vans.

I'm in the lines but a LWB Land Rover is the same size as the bay.
I admit, I was very close to the grey Skoda Estate behind, but it was that or leave the front hanging in the (single) maneuvering lane.

We both get back to the motors at the same time... nearly all the cars and vans either side are now gone. I apologise to Skoda's OH and turn to put the key in the door, only to find Mr Skoda, 6 inches away from my face asking 'why did you have to park against my hatch?' Like I did it deliberately.
I said in a neutral tone 'OK I'm going now'... ignored his inaudible response, got in and left quickly, with any luck I showered him with slush when I gunned it out of the bay in RWD 1st... (I don't like that tone of voice and am not the physical type)

I appreciate it was an irritation not being able to access his boot, but the size of the bay and the vehicle in it didn't leave me any choice... other than to circle the car park waiting for a space to appear.

Everyone knows car parking bays are getting smaller and still get angry when they get hemmed in.

  • I was in the marked bay
  • I had apologised
  • I was trying to leave quickly to get out of the way
Did he have a right to be angry?
What would you have done?

Park nose in so the rear of the car is easily accessible. Simples.

The only thing you did wrong was that you apologised to him.

His fault for not parking nose in and allowing access to his own boot from the 'roadway'.

Normally I always reverse into a spot, but at Tesco or the like would drive in so I can unload the trolley straight into the boot....simples smile

Yes. He drives a Skoda. He's angry because he can't afford a Golf.

If they wanted to get into their boit they should have parked nose in.

I might have apoligised just out of politeness, just as you did.
If the partner had said something I probably would have asked them to repeat it.

Then I might have just decided to leave my car there.

No and you should not have apologised, you had done noting wrong.

Me I would have ignored him or depending how big he was told him to go fk himself.

OP; you did nothing wrong. You inconvenienced somebody but you were decent enough to apologise – if guy in the Skoda wants to get confrontational over such a small issue then he’s got bigger problems than not being able to (briefly) load his car up IMO.

Comfort yourself with the thought that he’ll square up to the wrong person one day and will get a (deserved) slap.

I would’ve done the same as you... if you are going to get into a confrontation/fight, make sure it’s for a damn good reason.

Surely the other guy inconvenienced himself by backing in the space right up to the line, and leaving himself open to that situation?

I apologised to his OH on instinct out of politeness, all I said to him was 'I'm going now' and then ignored him because of his tone.
I didn't back down, I just stepped past him and unlocked the door.

I try to remain neutral in confrontations, so as not to make them worse... Rule #1

Interesting comment as the the answer to several 'what £6k diesel car' threads on here often have a Scoda Octavia in the responses.

Sounds like the OP acted very reasonably. I'd have probably done the same.

The OP states that the Skoda was already there... but you do have a point. He could’ve pointed this out the chap if this was the case, but somehow I doubt that the other bloke was the ‘let’s have a reasoned debate’ type.

I have never understood why when people go to the shops they reverse into a space. If your getting lots of shopping so require access to your boot why the fk would you do that. I've sat an watched (yes I know I need to get out more) people struggling to shuffle down the side of their car just to load the boot.

It makes me laugh.

I wish I had a life. :-(

Totally his problem. Maybe whilst parking he "drove through" from your space and forgot he'd have to load up the shopping afterwards. Unless the car park has a marked pathway between rows of spaces?
