Attended interview and since been advised company is taking up references.

Is this a good sign? I assume if they weren't interested they wouldn't bother requesting references?

I'd assume the same, although wouldn't expect that to be done until you'd at the very least verbally accepted the role. What if you'd decided it wasn't for you after the interview, but your current employers still get a reference request from a potential new one?

My contract finishes shortly with my current employer and is not being renewed but not for any negative reasons. Just they won't need me.

Well, I've worked in specialist recruitment and also been in General Management roles which involved recruiting for every role.

It's actually quite a long process, and quite a skilled matter if you want the right people, and not something to treat as a chore or in a flippant manner. Bad recruiting can bugger a company up quite quickly. Most managers and MD's know this and are equally careful.

Hence, to do it right brings a good deal of commitment time-wise, in addition to the cost, so any process that isn't entirely necessary to the goal simply won't get house room.

So, unless I was fairly close to making a judgement or decision on a candidate, there is no way I would spend time following up references - there just isn't the time or space to do so unless it's pivotal to the process.

In your case, then, I might suggest success and an offer coming your way soon...

Previous roles I have been offered subject to satisfactory references…in this case no offer has been made yet but they are taking up references?
