Hi chaps, situation is as follows... existing silencer box was cut open and all silencing material removed by a previous owner. For some time now its been rattling internally and its driving me mad. I'm told it would be a tricky job to cut it open again and then reweld due the existing (re)welded surface. Looks like it was done from underneath, but I'm guessing if it was removed from the car the other side (currently facing upwards) could be cut... I have two reasons for cutting it open, one is to fix the rattle (I'm assuming its one of the perforated pipes come loose), and the other is to repack it with silencing material as I now have a decat Y piece to fit and it will (I'm sure) be way too noisy if the silencer box remains without and silencing material.

Sooo, I'm also thinking an option might be to source a suitable new silencer box and simply cut the old one out and clamp a new one in... There appears to be a myriad of box options from the specialist and 'performance' exhaust suppliers... many of these can even make you a new SS system from scratch (bending/cutting/welding etc).

Was wondering if anyone had done the 'replacement box' thing or had other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks muchly,

Chilli smile

The repair job should be a runner as you don't get involved with the previous surgery and will not cost the Crown Jewels

Do as I did, I had exactly the same problem. My back box was "sleeved", which meant that the wadding was gone and the perforated pipes were cut away. Sound was hollow and not nice. It was welded shut (rubbish job), so I cut it open again, that was easy enough. Then I made two new stainless steel tubes in the correct length and started drilling holes in them (to put in instead of the perforated pipe which now was completely removed). Just drill the holes a bit smaller than the original and fewer holes. Weld in correct place and then stuff with exhaust wadding or ceramic dampening material. Weld up and job done...

I have this with clives y and no precats..... terror in the tunnels ears lots of pops and bangs
