One thing that has occured to me this morning, is that these days it is a very rare event for me to hear a car's thumping sub from 100yards away.

A decade ago when I was in my driving infancy, virtually every young lad had one of the following:

3 x 10" subs
2 x 12" subs
1 x 15" sub, in the boot. Everywhere they went it was thumping away. Some of them would do laps of my town high street.

I can't remember the last time I heard a car on the road, or whilst a pedestrian, with an obnoxious sound system.

Where have they all gone?

They will still be about, just in far less numbers. Also remember that was the era of cheap fuel and people could afford to modify cars to extreme lengths and afford to run them.

Now you have cars with integrated complex stereos that are a pain to upgrade. I think this also has an effect.

ISTR installing £3,000 worth of Alpine audio gear into my 928, it sounded sweet.

I think its a combination of cost, ability and the evolving scene.

As above, running a car costs far more than it ever has. People still modify but most have far less disposable income than 10 years ago.

Ability because a lot of modern cars simply wont take a standard DIN head unit. This makes it a lot trickier to put something in you can attach an amp too. Plus ther fact that a lot of modern cars come with a reasonable stereo with a built in sub these days, most people probably don't see the need.

As for the evolving scene, its true. Long gone are the says of going into Halfords and buying loads of crap off the shelf to slap in your car. People just don't do it any more. Pick up any magazine these days and the mods in them are generally thought out and planned to achieve a look or purpose rather than just trying to have everything in it. People these days go for either SQ with a minimal install (just 1 smaller sub etc) or go all out with a comp system filling the car with subs to compete.

Still plenty of them in Leeds. I am in the process of amassing the build to go in the back of my "wifes" (yeah right) Beetle...thus far:-

2 Pioneer 6x9's on a boxed and ported custom shelf
12" Alpine Sub again boxed in ported custom build running off a 1000W Pioneer Amp
2 sets of FLI 6.5" low profile components one set in the rear panels, one set in the front

I have yet to get a head unit to run it all off but i quite fancy one of these when they come out.....

Just to keep things a little less "boy Racer" than when i was a kid.....

Factor of age and insurance costs these days.
As you get older you are less likely to be acting like a knob around town, and younger drivers are penalized by expensive insurance, so less of them about etc.
think the scene has changed since the Max power days of the late 90's early 2000s

Our office is on a corner over a traffic light controlled junction, even through the double glazing 2 floors up we hear loads of them. They're always the ones with the worst taste in music too* biggrin
