Winter Driving
Discussion
It never ceases to amaze me just how badly some people behave behind the wheel in the snow!
I saw 3 bumps this morning en route to work, all down to people not adjusting to the conditions.
I also saw a stupid number of people who clearly couldn't afford the 2 extra minutes to clear the snow properly from their cars.
It properly winds me up!!

You forgot people adjusting to the conditions by driving everywhere at 30mph, even when they're on a gritted and ploughed motorway ,but welding themselves to the outside lane regardless and jabbing the brakes every 10 seconds.
Regarding people too lazy to clear their cars, special mention to the clown I saw on Monday. Hadnt bothered to clear their roof, pootling along in lane 3 on a clear section of motorway. I'm approaching in lane 1 having just merged on so get a brilliant view of him brake test someone who came up behind him wanting past, shunting all the snow off his roof on to the windscreen, then swerving across lane 2 and 3 in a blind panic as he now couldnt see where the f
k he was going.

some clear a small patch, some have just jumped in and started driving, not even the bottom has cleared with engine heat.
Others have wipers going to clear it.
Then there's the usual, no lights, side lights, side and fog lights, main lights and fog lights and every other combo going.
How there's not more accidents about, surprises me.

It always amazes me why people think you have to use 1st gear and spin the wheels out of control to move on the snow.
Honestly get a good laugh as you pass them spinning away franticly going nowhere. Use the gears dammit.
Yep. Yesterday morning I sat for best part of 5 minutes waiting at the bottom of a gentle hill for some twunt in a Corsa bouncing off the rev limiter in 1st, wheels spinning, sliding slowly sideways. They eventually gave up, reversed at 0.5 mph, turned around and went another way, towards an even steeper hill. Don't get why they were having trouble, my car with larger, wider wheels and summer tyres just cruised up it no problem.Honestly get a good laugh as you pass them spinning away franticly going nowhere. Use the gears dammit.
Bit later on, queueing for some lights, waited for ages behind a mk2 TT who was just sitting on the road. There is a gentle hill that plateaus shortly before the lights but for some reason this one sat and waited til the hill was clear, then took a run up at it. I'd have understood if the road was covered in snow and ice, but it was just a bit wet with a couple of slushy patches. Go figure.
Edit - quoted wrong post originally, doh.

i passed a corvette out today and yesterday on the back roads by Kingswells both snowy mornings... was in the M3 with winter boots which has been remarkably good. and traveled rural aberdeenshire untreated slimy roads with good composure.
Yesterday was just bonkers, i passed so many freshly crashed cars.. other pet hate is folk who clear the windows only, then leave the lights, and indicators... good thinking batman

Sagaris to and from work as usual, steady in second gear along our road end to the main road over the snow, no worries.
Front splitter effective as a snow plough as usual.
Nearly 90k on the clock, all weather car .......

Also been using the Sag, takes it all in its stride...

It is amazing how many people shunt into the car in front in the town/city when it snows. I think it shows how many people can't understand the principal of leaving distance between your car and the car infront. I barely need the brakes driving in snow/ice in town, I let engine braking do most of the work (also avoids wheels skidding) and hang well back from others when the weather is bad.

Er flaw with using engine braking, good idea as it is, is the poor guy behind only see's brake lights at last second
that's why I very slightly depress the brake pedal to show them my brake lights Driving with snow on your car roof could land you with a £60 fine and three points on your licence.
And if you find it hard to believe, check rule 229 of the Highway Code.
Police say motorists could be prosecuted for careless or inconsiderate driving if they are involved in an accident and it is deemed that snow on the roof was a factor
They were stopping cars on the A9 for this a few weeks ago.
