Currently have a 320d 2007 with 70,000 on the clock and looking at getting a Jag XJ diesel 2006 with around 55,000 miles.

Would you recommend one?
What would it be like compared to my 320d?
What is the mpg like?
Is there anything I should avoid?

I'm 30 in a couple of days and always wanted one.

Great car, no concerns whatsoever, the 2.7D really suits the XJ. Check the paint for corrosion, but 55k is quite low for an XJ.

Triple7,

I was looking at trading the 320d in for one. Maybe have to add a couple of grand to get one. I've seen some around the £9500 mark (I'm a lowly FO if your user name means anything!)

What sort of MPG can I expect due to the 80 mile commute across the Pennines?

Thanks.

Jinkster, I have a 2006 XJ D, upgraded from a 57 530M sport auto. I believe the jag is better in all areas apart from body roll. I regularly achieve mid to late 30's MPG, on the a run easily over 40 at 80mph which gives me about 650 miles to 130 quids worth of diesel. Across the pennines in Sport mode you'll get early to mid 30's no worries, you can be even more frugal just depends how heavy your right foot is.
Points to note: Make sure you have a fresh battery, the XJ uses lots of volts on start up and an old battery in poor condition will bring up spurious electrical errors, which go away after you've changed the battery. The car does suffer bush failures but coming from my rock hard 5 i didnt notice anything wrong till I tried another XJ.. Ohh and if it hasn't had a gearbox oil change make sure you get it changed, will cost you around £350, but well worth it.
After 2 years with this car I now find initial accelaration (up to 60) to be a tad tardy but mid range and overtaking punch is plentiful, but more likely is that I am use to the car now. Like all big cars it can be expensive if it goes wrong, dont forget its got 2 turbos, 2 EGR valves, dpf filters etc etc. I would implore you to find one at a Jag dealer and negotiate a 2 year warrenty, if you can, even paying more for it, its well worth it and will give you peace of mind.
Happy hunting and keep us posted.
