Unleaded and Leaded
Discussion
So people, what you do on this matter ??
We got the jeep gonna be on the road soon, engine things.. fireing on 3 sometimes so needs abit of a tune, change of sparks etc (we hope) ... But its still running on leaded !
Do you add the lead replacement ? .. is that ok ?? whats it like
Or
Do you convert it to unleaded, what's the cost of this ?

Our local Tesco still sells LRP and no shortage of customers. I'd be happy to mix LRP:unleaded in a ratio of 1:2 if I couldn't find LRP when needed. Obviously would not run the LRP dry before topping up with unleaded. I believe unleaded will not affect the valve seats immediately. The lead or lead substitute takes a while to wear off which is why I don't worry about using unleaded occasionally.
I only do about 1000 miles a year and when I had my unloved 1300 engine, I used 1:1 u/l:LRP and it ran very well. I cannot say for how long it might have though !!! And I didn't look at the valve seats before I sold it.
Cheers

Hi,
Use a FBHVC approved additive and you won't have problems.
I used Superblend 2000 for lots of years, and my 1600 Pinto has done over 100,000 miles still not had head off or any valve recession problems.
You can get one with Octane Booster.
Try Practical Classics magazine for adverts.
Good luck.

Errrmm, Really depends on how many miles you do a year and what state of tune the engines in. I`m currently running a 1600 x flow on straight unleaded `cos with no weather gear at all the mileage is very low - about 1,000 per annum. A friend of mine (who recently won the comp for best originally restored `T`) runs his 1920`s model T and a `35 Austin and best of all a 1922 Rolls on straight unleaded with no probs.....all low tune, low mileage vehicles, and yes he does drive them to the shows. Retarding the ignition also helps.
