My new Chim is in for a service.....
Discussion
Well the 450 Chim I bought 2 weeks ago is in the garage for a full 12,000 service. It did have a full history but not from a TVR specialist so I thought best to get it professionally looked over.
Glad I did.
Nothing major, just a few bits and pieces. 2 x fuel lines, rear bearings (which I knew about at purchase), alternator drive belt and a PAS hose that is split on the outside (inside intact though) that needs replacing.
Fine I thought.
However a call this evening to say it needs a new thermostat (that explains the cool running) and the exhaust manifold gaskets are leaking and do I want the work done. Oh, and the camshaft is very 'cammy'.
Bugger.
So that front end respray and roll bar will have to go on hold then as its going to cost about a grand to replace it with a Stealth.
I haven't given the go ahead yet but I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't be done.
On the plus side, he reckons the car is a good car and I got a bargain. A Chim with replaced outriggers and a new camshaft should put me in a good position going forward.
Oh, and apparently the throttle was 'far from opening' when fully pressed.
And I thought it was fast as it was....
Hey ho, its only money.

Ooh, let us know how you get on; if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay ?
I'm expecting bad news too regarding rear bearings or diff, though I can't feel any play, there is a noise I don't think belongs!
Like you, mine had outriggers and also front wishbone done last year - which made me feel confident about my purchase...

So long as the manifold bolts come off easily, the manifold gaskets are not a major job.
Ask him what he means by cammy. If a replacement is essential, then you might get both jobs done a bit cheaper at the same time. The cam lies down the middle of the valley under the plenum, between the heads.

That's what the garage said. Ask him what he means by cammy. If a replacement is essential, then you might get both jobs done a bit cheaper at the same time. The cam lies down the middle of the valley under the plenum, between the heads.
With the thermostat and gaskets, it will probably save about £100 in labour in getting them done at the same time as the cam shaft.

Are you aware of the open day at Neil Garners at Kemble, 30th March? Over 150 TVRs will be there, including some pretty special ones.
Is that far away for us Northerners ?QBee said:

Is that far away for us Northerners ?I wouldn't dream of saying your expert is wrong, but is he sure it's the mnifold gaskets and not the 4>1 union in the manifold itself? That is a very common fault. See the other current thread. Perhaps ask him if those joins in the middle of the manifold are ok while he has the manifolds off?

It's painful but I have authorised a replacement Stealth cam to be fitted.....
So what a couple of months ago was a wish for a £3k Wedge has rapidly gone up.......
But look at the car you have and with the price you paid, all in, this is a relatively low price for a nicely sorted Chim.So what a couple of months ago was a wish for a £3k Wedge has rapidly gone up.......
You will soon forget the outlay when the sun finally arrives........enjoy
I bought my Chim 400 just over 2 weeks ago from a TVR specialist with full history. I wanted a decent car I could tweak, improve and stamp my mark on.
After going down this route I still have it in pieces, the radiator was rotten and leaking. The roads where a bit wet when I took it for a test drive so didn't show up immediately.
So I am fitting new alloy radiator, Silicon hoses and Stainless steel Swan neck , so that will be one job ticked off the list.
These cars are now getting on a bit and depending how well they where looked after i.e. keeping on top of maintenance and fixing faults.
You need an open mind and open cheque book to keep these cars going

Don't worry, I'm looking forward to the sun and it's only money.
That will soon be forgotten long after the excitment of the car remains. I am hopeful of a fairly sorted car once this is all done but there will always be bits and pieces that will need doing.
You are right though, I did get a good deal on the car in my opinion, well under the advertised price.

it'll be interesting to hear how you feel the performance changes with the new cam in.. I might have been inclined to just do the thermostat and the basics (fluids and filters) and pop it on a rolling road to see what the power was (oh and a just the throttle cable first LOL)..
Cam wear is quite hard to diagnose on these without opening it up....

Jules,
It was opened up. The sump was dropped and the lobes measured/inspected.
Summary: f
ked cam unfortunately.
In fairness I knew that buying a 77k car that hadn't had a cam change was always a bit risky but hopped I'd be able to get it done next year. Buying one with a good chassis (this was all done in April 11) was more important to me.
