Someone i know of had their car stolen off the driveway. The stupidly left it running on the driveway and went inside the house while it was defrosting.

Someone jumped in and drove off. Car hasnt been seen since.

Insurance company have refused to pay out on the basis the vehicle was left running on the driveway and unattended.

Is there anything at all can be done? Assuming the car never gets found, or maybe gets burnt out or whatever, is it simply a case of having to just write it off (expensively) to experiance?

I'd say its goodbye to the car and any payout sadly. If insurance companies paid out when people left their keys in the car they'd be mad.

Yep. An expensive mistake.

I can't see the owner getting a penny back off the insurance.

Yep, same happened to a chap I work with last winter, had his 3 week old Focus stolen and didn't get a bean from his insurance. Police never recovered the car either.

are people really that stupid? its like those that leave a car running while they "pop" in to get their fags and paper in the mornings. Deserve to lose them!

Chap in our street used to leave his van running at 06:00 every morning whilst he went back inside for his brekky. He had several people ask him not to.

Eventually someone popped out, removed the keys, and posted them back to his employer with a note explaining how they got them.

Haven't seen the van for a while, perhaps he has a different job now.

tt 1 - leaving it on the drive running and unattended.
tt 2 - telling the insurance co. you did that.

That's quite funny.

I suppose it's a form of stupidity tax, but I'm amazed that people don't think before they act sometimes.

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me, it has to be said.

and when the insurance co. come around and interview you/your mate and just as they are leaving ask BTW where are the keys?

Oh I've lost them/can't find them and a myriad of other excuses do you think they will believe you. Not a chance as they weren't born yesterday. Then you could get done for trying to defraud and insuarnce company.

Well worth the time cosying up to Chris Hunhe

I'm astonished people still do this - there are two people living near me who do it.

No chance of getting any payout from the insurance.

Oh dear sorry to hear that.

A family friend was very lucky that both his insurance and Gap insurance paid out when his car was stolen when he left it running to defrost just before Christmas.

They only coughed up because he was stood next to it clearing his other car. He thought his wife had got in the car and only realised something was wrong when he heard it wheel spinning off down the road.

Surely the answer is just to lock the car with your second set of keys? This is what I do, I know leaving cars to idle is bad, but I'm lazy and I like it nice and toasty warm.

Apparently 3 were taken in the Cambridge area this morning in the same way. Clearly it's a bit stupid but there also seem to be rather more opportunistic car thieves around that I expected.

Insurance Co.
"So how do you think the thief start your car? It says on your insurance documents that you have an immobiliser"

Scantily
"Ah, well the keys were in it and it was running. They probably just smashed the window and climbed in"

Insurance Co.
"Next!"

Meanwhile the rest of the world thanks you for your pointless pollution and waste of a finite resource. Get heated seats, or a hat and gloves or something?
